Since then, the agency has financially aided millions of Americans. Unfortunately, there is some bad news for SSA beneficiaries, as there will be no payment today. Beneficiaries will have to wait slightly longer before they can reap the benefits again.

SSA payments are not being made today

July is an exciting time in America, especially with Independence Day celebrations two days away. For the more than 70 million Americans who thought they would be receiving some additional cash just before the celebrations, think again. If you are new to Social Security, we recommend paying attention, as there will be no payments today, but there will be soon.

First of all, Social Security is a federal insurance program that benefits retirees, survivors of deceased beneficiaries or workers, and people with qualifying disabilities. As mentioned, the number of Americans who benefit from Social Security is gigantic, which is why not everyone receives Social Security benefits on the same day. Which is why, second of all, the SSA utilizes two approaches to distribute monthly benefits.

Social Security beneficiaries will have to wait until this date

The SSA utilizes two approaches to ensure that beneficiaries receive their benefits on time each month. The first approach is distributing to beneficiaries according to their birth dates on three specified Wednesdays throughout the month. The second approach is by utilizing a fixed payment schedule each month. This rule of thumb applies to any US citizen who started claiming retirement, spousal, or survivor benefits after May 1997.

According to the Social Security payment schedule, the following beneficiaries will be receiving Social Security on this date:

Citizens with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of any given month who receive retirement, spousal, and survivor benefits

Wednesday, July 9, 2025

2025 has been a topsy-turvy year for the SSA, so if you are a part of the abovementioned group, but you did not receive your Social Security benefits on July 9, do not fret. You should wait at least three business days before reaching out to the agency, as indicated by the SSA. Keep in mind that public holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays are not considered business days. The SSA can be contacted at 1-800-772-1213 Monday to Friday.

These beneficiaries will be receiving the maximum payment

Retirement is a major life event, and for some, it could start as early as the age of 62. However, it could be confusing when you hear through the grapevine that some of your friends or old colleagues are receiving higher benefits than you do. Understanding that the monthly benefit could vary from person to person is key.

“The average amount of the Social Security benefit changes each month. Social Security benefits are based on a worker’s highest 35 years of earnings. Because wages tend to rise over time, each new group of retirees raises the average benefit amount, as their calculations often reflect higher earnings.” – SSA spokesperson statement in Newsweek

The average monthly Social Security payment for 2025 is $2,002, but some will receive above average and others below average. Besides your 35 years of highest earnings, your full retirement age (FRA) also impacts your monthly payment amounts. According to the SSA, the maximum Social Security payment is:

$2,969 for retiring at age 62

$4,152 for retiring at FRA

$5,181 for retiring at age 70

By delaying your retirement age until age 70, you will boost your monthly Social Security payments. Who knew that being older would be the loophole we were looking for? Keep in mind, your monthly payments will vary depending on when you choose to retire.

Disclaimer: This content is informational only and does not supersede or replace the SSA’s or IRS’s own publications and notices.
