And it seems as though this Japanese automaker strikes again, but this time with a liquid hydrogen breakthrough. This new energy wave was showcased at this well-known race.

A new energy wave for Toyota

It is not easy to simultaneously achieve carbon neutrality and deliver quality and efficient cars to compete in the motorsports world unless you are Toyota. The Japanese automaker entered a GR Corolla powered by liquid hydrogen in the 2024 Super Taikyu Final. The final is usually when new initiatives are announced, and Toyota made no exception to the 2024 series.

Toyota unveiled a new concept model during the 2024 series final, which uses boil-off gas. The model might have been in the concept stage; however, the technology could reportedly enhance the entire liquid hydrogen system’s energy efficiency by recovering and utilizing the boil-off gas as energy. The automaker also made it clear that it was seeking partnerships to realize this technology.

Japan’s liquid hydrogen breakthrough

The fact that Toyota entered the GR Corolla into the Super Taikyu Final Fuji speaks a thousand words. Super Taikyu is an endurance racing series, and the automaker most likely decided to highlight its liquid hydrogen breakthrough by using it in this endurance race. The endurance race lasts 24 hours, for those who did not know.

Toyota has taken pride in its contribution to the hydrogen society, and it has continued to push that pursuit forward with a new wave in energy, liquid hydrogen. The liquid hydrogen-powered GR Corolla sported the following features:

A liquid hydrogen pump with improved durability thanks to a dual-drive crank mechanism

The potential of completing the 24-hour race without the need for replacement

Improved cruising range with a custom-shaped tank

Custom oval shape tank allows increased storage of liquid hydrogen

Automated CO2 capture device process changeover

Mechanics usually switch the CO2 absorption and separation processes manually in the race’s final, but now, time was saved

Now, naturally, all liquid hydrogen systems present a common problem, since liquid hydrogen operates at lower pressure than traditional compressed gaseous hydrogen used in some Toyota cars. The resulting problem is the boil-off gas. Now, Toyota’s concept model could be the answer.

A viable solution to every energy problem

First things first, boil-off gas is vaporized hydrogen caused by the natural heat that comes from the outside and is usually lost to the atmosphere while driving. According to Toyota, it had developed a technology that sends boil-off gas released from liquid hydrogen in the tank to a self-pressurizer. This gas is then changed back to hydrogen fuel with applied pressure. The self-pressurizer increases pressure by two to four times and generates reusable fuel without additional energy.

There could be excess boil-off gas, which is then entered into a small fuel cell package to convert hydrogen into electricity. This electricity can be utilized to power other parts, such as the liquid hydrogen pump’s motor. This enhances the technology’s energy efficiency. Any boil-off gas that was not utilized is then converted into water vapor with a catalyst and safely released outside the car.

It seems as if Toyota has thought of it all when it comes to its latest technology. Should the automaker successfully enhance its latest pursuit, we could truly be looking at a new wave of energy within the motorsports world and the mobility sector in general. Could liquid hydrogen and boil-off gas truly be the future of clean energy?

Disclaimer: Our coverage of events affecting companies is purely informative and descriptive.
