Have you ever heard of a company called 23andMe? If not, then buckle up, buttercup. The San Francisco-based company does genetic testing that informs customers about their ancestry and health risks based on their DNA. In October 2023, the company announced that hackers had breached the personal data<\/strong> of approximately 6.4 million US residents<\/a>.<\/p>\n Inevitably, the company was hit by a class action lawsuit in January 2024. Plaintiffs argued that the company could have implemented proper cybersecurity to prevent the data breach, but failed to do so, and also failed to inform certain specific customers with Chinese or Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry that their data had been breached. 23andMe denied all wrongdoing, but agreed to a $30 million settlement<\/strong> to settle these allegations.<\/p>\n The company had been struggling ever since the 2023 breach, and eventually filed for bankruptcy<\/strong> in March 2025. According to CNET<\/em>, the head of TTAM Research Institute and co-founder of 23andMe, Anne Wojcicki, has outbid Regeneron Pharmaceuticals to acquire the company.<\/p>\n Typical of all settlements, only one group of people will qualify for the money. Still, 6.9 million customers are one big group of people, so it is best to see whether you may qualify as well. These are the requirements to claim<\/strong> from this settlement:<\/p>\n If you meet all of the above requirements, you will qualify for this settlement. According to the company, you could also qualify if you used any of the following services<\/strong> within that period:<\/p>\n If you are certain that you are a class member of this settlement<\/a>, then you should ensure you claim by the deadline<\/strong>; otherwise, you will lose out big time.<\/p>\n This settlement’s reimbursement is certainly worth it<\/strong>. Class members will be able to claim the following:<\/p>\n Beyond monetary reimbursement, the company also agreed to provide all class members with five years of Privacy & Medical Shield + Genetic Monitoring service.
