In fact, its name is derived from Choctaw words. Others may know this state as the “Sooner State,” as settlers arrived long before the 1889 land run. Now, it will be known as the lithium‑magnet heartland, redefining the energy industry and marking the end of China and Russia.

It’s the end of the road for China and Russia

The world is slowly but surely transitioning to renewable energy sources in a global attempt to decrease the reliance on fossil fuels for power production. For years, coal, natural gas, and petroleum (crude oil) have all been burned to produce energy, but they have unfortunately also produced greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, that have contributed to climate change.

A few countries that support and advocate for protecting the environment also saw an opportunity to capitalize on this new sustainable transition. A great example is China, which has long been viewed as the global leader in renewable energies, particularly solar energy. According to the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, the Chinese government supplied tax incentives and credits to coax investors. Slowly, China built a solar manufacturing industry that manufactures more solar panels for less, and has a strong domestic market.

China also relies on rare earths, which play a crucial role in its renewable and EV industries, among others. Russia, while not a leader in renewables, economically depends on crude oil exports, and now it seems, it could be the end for both China and Russia, as one state emerges as a heartland of a resource that will lure investment from various industries.

This state emerges as the lithium‑magnet heartland

A Connecticut-based company, called Stardust Power, has taken a leap of faith. In December 2024, the company finalized and declared successful the acquisition of a 66-acre site in Muskogee, Oklahoma. This site will be utilized for the construction of a refinery in Southside Industrial Park to extract lithium from brine. The company chose the Oklahoma site due to its central location in the US for delivery and shipment.

“With the land purchase complete and key permitting secured, we are excited to enter the construction phase in Muskogee.” – Roshan Pujari, founder and CEO of Stardust Power

Stardust Power plans on starting construction in 2025, with the development planned in two stages. The first stage will focus on creating a production line with the ability to generate up to 25,000 metric tons of lithium annually. In the second stage, a second production line will be added to increase the total capacity up to 50,000 metric tons annually. Imagine the significant impact it will have on the US EV and lithium-battery industry.

The advantages are beyond expectations

“Currently there is no large-scale refinery for battery-grade lithium in the United States… When fully operational, our new lithium refinery will both speed America’s energy transition and boost Oklahoma’s local economy…” – Pujari

The company believes the refinery will receive up to $257 million in state and federal financial incentives, boosting the US economy. According to Autoweek, the Biden Administration prioritized incentives on American manufactured EVs with US batteries and locally sourced minerals. This in turn will decrease the reliance on imports.

Another advantage is the annual capacity of lithium will be enough to power 1.1 million EVs, and that many EVs will significantly lower the US’s total carbon footprint. Muskogee, which has a skilled workforce, will see a boost in local job opportunities.

The refinery in Oklahoma will overall be very advantageous, not only to the local community and economy, but to the entire US in the long term. This project, along with Trump’s tariffs, will hopefully inspire more local production incentives.

The largest population of Native Americans in all of the US calls this particular state home.
