Its modest size and impressive output redefine the saying that dynamite comes in small packages.

The European country’s tiny, powerful turbine

The world has been joined together in a global mission to achieve net-zero by 2050. Why? Carbon emissions and various other greenhouse gases have been harming the planet for far too long and have significantly contributed to climate change. The impact of climate change is felt across the world, especially as the planet’s temperatures are rising and fresh drinking water is becoming more scarce by the day.

The solution? Renewable energy sources, of course! Solar, hydropower, geothermal, biomass, and wind energy are all sustainable sources with little to no emissions, making them the ideal alternatives to carbon-emitting fossil fuels. A European country in particular is behind an innovative and tiny, yet powerful, turbine that could power homes annually. Hold on to your stroopwafels, as this design is a game-changer!

Dynamite comes in small packages

A Dutch company called Cell Technologies has engineered a pioneering wind turbine that will revolutionize the industry. Directors François Huijbregts and Marcel Naaktgeboren are behind the design’s development, which is called The Blade. The first model, BladeX1, will be 1.4m in height and 60cm in width, its size making it a desirable choice for most Dutch communities.

According to Bio Based Press, the company planned on starting production of these tiny turbines by the end of 2025 and aims to produce approximately 60,000 turbines annually. Do not let the size fool you, as the BladeX1 may be small, but it is powerful. The BladeX1 can reportedly produce up to 3,000 kWh of renewable power annually, which is approximately the annual power usage of an average Dutch household.

How it works

The BladeX1 utilizes a plastic hood, which is on top of the turbine, allowing it to rotate with the wind direction. This prevents wind from being lost at the back and circulates it again. This allows the aluminium to capture the wind without being slowed by a vortex (unlike traditional turbines). The BladeX1 also comprises a transmission system that is similar to a vehicle’s, thus transferring the wind energy from bigger gears to smaller gears that control the generator. Less torque is required, and twice the power is produced.

Producing so much more than power

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, while traditional wind turbines are better alternatives to fossil fuels, they still have their disadvantages, which include but are not limited to:

Required large spaces of land

Pose threats to surrounding wildlife, i.e., bats and birds

Noise pollution

Visual pollution

Limited applications

The advantages of the BladeX1

Zero noise (it does not even vibrate)

Safe for the surrounding wildlife

It’s very small, thus reducing visual pollution

Lightweight and easy to install

Applications include residential, agricultural, and small businesses

A safety system that automatically halts functioning in severe winds

“This is how we tackle energy poverty – giving everyone the chance to make their homes more sustainable and generate their own green energy. That is our mission.” – Marcel Naaktgeboren and François Huijbregts

Pioneering wind turbine designs such as the BladeX1 not only produce efficient, clean energy, but they also increase the accessibility to clean power, especially for people who live and work in extremely remote locations. These turbines will surely contribute to the global mission of achieving net zero by 2050.

Disclaimer: Our coverage of events affecting companies is purely informative and descriptive.
