Just as you think you’ve seen it all, something called the Skybrator enters. This strange pole offers a compelling alternative to the wind turbines that we’ve come to know, and it could open new horizons for the industry.

Change does not come easily

Nations worldwide have been gradually transitioning to renewable energy sources in a collective effort to mitigate the effects of global warming. Renewable energy sources are a great alternative to burning fossil fuels, as they have little to no harmful emissions. Unfortunately, these resources are not as foolproof as one would hope.

Take wind energy, for instance. According to Lumify Energy, the disadvantages of traditional wind turbines include negative impacts on wildlife (birds and bats), noise pollution, visual pollution, difficulty connecting them to the grid (especially in remote areas), and the requirement of large pieces of land for installation. This makes transitioning to wind energy much less pleasant.

Thankfully, an innovative company has engineered a very strange but effective “pole” that has the potential to solve all the disadvantages faced by traditional turbines. As David Yáñez, the Inventor, Founder, and Co-CEO of the company, states:

“Our technology has different characteristics which can help to fill the gaps where traditional wind farms might not be appropriate.”

This strange pole will make the transition so much easier

This strange pole is known as the Skybrator and was invented by the Spanish tech startup, Vortex Bladeless. The Skybrator is exactly like a traditional turbine in a sense, except that it operates without blades, shafts, and gears, making this turbine an attractive alternative to traditional turbines, especially in urban regions. If you wonder how it operates, the answer is simple.

Power is generated by a phenomenon called “vortex shedding.” This means the “pole” vibrates due to the air pressure resulting from the wind circling the cylinder, making it oscillate relative to the base. Power is then generated via an alternator. Wind energy is thus harnessed from the aerodynamic resonance. This makes the Skybrator extremely versatile, something to seriously consider when considering transitioning to renewable sources, per TCD.

“this technology doesn’t aim to replace regular wind turbines nor is better than them. We propose an alternative with radically different characteristics that may open new horizons to wind energy in all scales from micro-wind to large-scale generation.” – Vortex Bladeless

It’s a wind turbine, but also so much more

Another challenge of traditional wind turbines is their high costs, especially the blades. Thankfully, the Skybrator addresses nearly all the challenges that are typically faced with traditional turbines. According to the Brighter Side, the Skybrator’s sleek design and minimal components make it the ideal renewable technology option for rooftops, homes, and urban regions where traditional turbines fall short.

“This could be wind power’s answer to the home solar panel — they complement each other well, because solar panels produce electricity during the day while wind speeds tend to be higher at night.” – Yáñez

The advantages of a bladeless wind turbine

It requires less maintenance, as it does not require lubrication

Zero noise pollution due to its silent operation

Wildlife friendly – does not disrupt bat and bird migrations or habitats

Safer and easier to install

Grid compatibility

Simple manufacturing and operation

Decreased visual pollution

Operates in less wind and alternating wind patterns

While everyone may not be as open to change, this wind turbine makes the process a little easier. As the world gradually transitions to renewable energy sources, innovative wind turbine designs such as the Skybrator play a significant role in decreasing our overall carbon footprint.

The world has been gradually transitioning to renewable energy sources, and as a result, we have seen many, many innovative renewable technology designs hit the market.
