Innovations in the renewable energy world continue to become more advanced as the world strives to reach carbon-neutrality goals. From the automobile industry embracing alternative engine solutions such as hydrogen and electrical engines, to a 100-year old math equation being solved to improve wind turbine output, stakeholders are showing a myriad of ways to harness renewable energy.

Solar power continues to advance

Perhaps the most utilized form renewable energy at both a small and large scale is solar power, with it certainly being the most well known. Solar technology is particularly the most drawn upon avenue for individual households to harness renewable energy. While the technology itself has become considerably more advanced since it was first released, struggles for consumer adoption still remain, with aesthetics being one concern.

Generally, solar panel arrays are installed by using either ground or roof mounts, with these arrays being limited to a few square meters to massive solar farms with hundreds of arrays. However, the technology remains somewhat unaesthetic to look at. With their ‘black box’ design and brutalist-esque aluminum design, they can throw off the aesthetic cohesiveness of a building entirely, which can be a large deterrent for consumer implementing them onto their private homes or company buildings.

Solarix is one company which has made it their mission to highlight how aesthetic appeal does not have to be sacrificed with the adoption of renewable energy technologies. Unlike the traditional solar panel mounts, the company has developed solar panel designs which can be mounted into the walls of a building with a choice of 16 colors and over 76 different designs, including customization to the clients preference and overall vision for a piece of architecture.

NASA embraces creativity with this origami design

Not just limited to small-scale businesses, NASA has long been jumping on the band wagon regarding embracing creativity and art not for consumer adoption, but in order to maximize the efficiency of solar panels. Brian Trease at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory utilized his knowledge of origami in order to produce advanced space-bound devices.

Partnering with researchers at the Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, Trease and Shannon Zirbel collaborated together to increase the efficiency of spacecraft components be employing origami fold techniques. In 2013, the researchers collaborated with origami expert Robert Lang and BYU professor Larry Howell to develop a solar array design that could fold up to be 8.9 feet (2.7 meters) in diameter. Once unfolded, the structure measured 82 feet (25 meters) across. When it comes to solar array efficiency, maximizing the surface area of the arrays is critical. The origami Miura fold has been particularly influential.

Massive breakthrough for wind power innovators

More recent news relates to a Penn-state student’s solution to a 100-year old problem regarding the aerodynamic model wind turbine shave for years operated off of.

“I created an addendum to Glauert’s problem which determines the optimal aerodynamic performance of a wind turbine by solving for the ideal flow conditions for a turbine in order to maximize its power output,” said Divya Tyagi in a Penn-state newsletter, who recently earned her bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering.

The new technology developed by Divya Tyagi addresses critical pitfalls to the 1935 model by British aerodynamicist Hermann Glauert which failed to account for the external forces which impact the wind turbine energy output. The breakthrough is expected to change the way in which wind turbines are designed.

Disclaimer: Our coverage of events affecting companies is purely informative and descriptive.
