Solar power technology is perhaps the most commonly thought of technology when it comes to renewable energy resources. Not only is the technology widespread, where is can be utilized by individuals, companies, and even at a utility level, but the technology has continuously been on the rise in becoming more efficient and cost-effective and even more aesthetically pleasing to look at.

Solar panel technology continues to be on the rise

Solar panels are possibly the most well known piece of technology which is used to capture renewable energy. Solar energy is used not just to power individual homes but is also used at a utility level to feed into power grids, has been used to power massive buildings and corporations and also plays a crucial role in powering space-orbiting vehicles.

The technology has come a long way since it first started to be introduced for mass adoption from the early 2000s. With the emergence of large-scale solar farms and rooftop solar installation becoming a reality for homeowners, today, solar panels’ efficiency rates have increased as much as 22% and with production costs also falling, more consumers are embracing this technology like never before.

In addition, solar panel technology upgrades have also been focused on changing the aesthetic appeal in order to encourage more consumers to adopt the technology. Often, what holds consumers back from embracing the technology merely comes down to the unaesthetic ‘black box’ appeal of the solar panels as well as the eyesore which occurs with ground- and rooftop-installation of many solar arrays. However, innovators are looking towards creating new solar panel designs which is not focused on improving the technology itself but rather on prioritizing the creative design appeal in order to make this technology more customizable for consumers.

This country makes a major breakthrough for solar

When it comes to designing futuristic solar panels, current efforts are focused on ways in which to maximize the efficiency of this technology without necessarily changing the photovoltaic technological requirements itself. Researchers in Germany recently have announced that they have increased the efficiency of solar panels by as much as 1,000 times better than today’s conventional solar panel methods.

“The interaction between the lattice layers appears to lead to a much higher permittivity – in other words, the electrons are able to flow much more easily due to the excitation by the light photons,” explained Dr. Akash Bhatnagar.

The change the researchers have made is what is referred to as a ‘crystal sandwich’ whereby the researchers stacked layers of barium titanate, strontium titanate, and calcium titanate into a lattice structure which has increased the absorption ability of the technology significantly. Today’s solar panels are primarily produced using silicon. If adopted on a more widespread level, this change to solar panels would mean a future whereby solar energy outputs could be much more sustainable and effective.

Other big updates in the renewable energy world

Solar energy is not the only renewable energy source which is seeing a significant update to the technology used to capture its energy. Recently, wind power technology is set for a revolutionary change thanks to the efforts from Undergraduate student Divya Tyagi at the Penn State University.

Tyagi successfully solved a decades-old aerodynamic problem related to the theoretical energy output wind turbines can produce. With the addendum she added to a 1935 aerodynamic model which has heavily influenced the production of today’s wind turbines, we could be looking at a future which sees significant increases in both solar and wind power technological efficiency. These upgrades could not come at a better time as the world rapidly adjusts to prevent irreversible climate damage.

Disclaimer: Our coverage of events affecting companies is purely informative and descriptive.
