Since the historical rivalry between its founder and Enzo Ferrari, the Italian manufacturer has gained recognition in a market that Ferrari dominated for years. New clutches, faster cars, and unseen aerodynamics: everything Lamborghini created was iconic from the start. Now, as the years have passed and new types of engines and fuels are being demanded by the industry, the brand is once again not rushing its plans.

The Italians are not concerned with trends: it’s about doing things right

The market for EV and hybrid cars is growing at a rapid pace, and brands need to adapt to the future, but Lamborghini prefers to do it the right way rather than rushing to join the market. In the last couple of years, the automaker has launched multiple cars with combustion engines, in an era where the industry is advocating for change to reach zero carbon emissions in 10 years.

That’s how the luxury supercar market operates. They don’t say much, but when they do, they make sure it’s loud enough to create anticipation and fear throughout the industry. It may not sell as many cars as Toyota, Honda, Fiat, or Mercedes, but it is the pinnacle of supercar engineering. Although there wasn’t much buzz around this project, it will happen soon enough.

Lamborghini is operating in multiple fronts: racing cars are next?

Lamborghini’s boss, Stephan Winkelmann, has already made it clear: hydrogen isn’t in the brand’s future, at least not in endurance racing. While Toyota, Alpine, and BMW are betting on hydrogen-powered entries for Le Mans 2028, the brand is sticking to its own script. The company’s focus is on hybrids for now.

Down the road, the plan shifts towards synthetic fuels and eventually a full electric model for the common roads. This doesn’t mean the combustion dream is over – demand for loud, high-displacement engines is still alive, and the company knows it. Rouven Mohr, the chief technical officer, has pointed out that the market simply isn’t ready for a fully electric Lamborghini supercar. For him, rushing into that space would only dilute the brand.

Instead, the brand is moving step by step. All three of its current flagships – the Revuelto with its V-12, the new twin-turbo Temerario, and the Urus – already carry hybrid power. Mohr has said that this setup gives the brand breathing room for at least a decade, while keeping the door open for the eventual transition to electric when the market mindset shifts – like what Formula 1 did.

Three more years before fans catch a glimpse of the new car

That moment isn’t far off. The company is preparing its first all-electric model for 2028, a 2+2 grand tourer previewed at Monterey as the Lanzador. It won’t be a traditional raging-bull supercar, but rather Lamborghini’s answer to a segment crowded with copycat EVs. Standing out in that field will be the next big test. It is not sure if this car will perform just like older models, but the visceral part of the car will not be in it, as electric engines are very quiet.

Lambo is also working on side projects with other big companies

Not everything in the company’s garage is made in-house. The brand has teamed up with Mercedes through a less obvious route. Back in 2021, Mercedes acquired Yasa, a British firm building compact axial-flux motors. Those very motors are now hidden inside Lamborghini’s latest icons – the V-12 Revuelto and the twin-turbo V-8 Temerario. The combustion engines remain their own, but the electric units driving the front axle are pure Yasa – something Mercedes didn’t even do for themselves.

Our coverage of events affecting companies is purely informative and descriptive.
