Nostalgia will continue to be one of the most reliable sources for marketers to base their campaigns on, because it never goes away. This is what Skoda thought. Now, the traditional European car manufacturer is working on bringing back its most famous car, hoping it will help the company in an era in which electric cars dominate everything.

The search for new European vehicles involves looking at old ones

For decades, European automakers have balanced innovation with heritage, constantly looking for ways to honor their past while staying competitive in a rapidly evolving industry. From the rise of compact hatchbacks in the 1980s to the dominance of eco-conscious models today, carmakers have long leaned on familiar designs to connect with drivers emotionally. Nostalgia, it turns out, is more than a marketing tool—it’s a bridge between generations of enthusiasts and the ever-changing automotive landscape.

In recent years, the pressure on traditional manufacturers has intensified. Electric vehicles are no longer a niche experiment; they’re reshaping the market, dictating technology trends, and forcing brands to rethink everything from production lines to brand identity. As the demand for EVs grows, companies that once thrived on conventional internal combustion engines are exploring every avenue to stay relevant—and that includes revisiting their own legacies.

Nearly 40 years later, Skoda brings back its iconic model: The Favorit

In May 2025, the European car manufacturer Skoda brought back a modern take on the 1899 Laurin & Klement Slavia B motorcycle. Now, the spotlight turns to another part of its history: the Favorit, the last model Skoda developed on its own before Volkswagen stepped in back in 1991. Built with limited resources under a communist regime, the Favorit could easily have been another forgettable European vehicle—considered a cheap, uninspiring car.

When it hit the streets in the summer of 1987, it surprised everyone. The five-door hatchback helped shape what we now recognize as Skoda’s modern identity. Under the hood, it had a modest 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine, putting out just 62 hp (46 kW / 63 PS). Not exactly a powerhouse, yet the Favorit found its way to international markets. Skoda proudly claimed it showed that their engineers could make a car that was both practical and appealing on a global stage.

The designer worked for months to get the design: Now, it’s coming

Today, designer Ljudmil Slavov has reimagined the Favorit for modern times. Around 120 hours of work went into the concept, which keeps the original Bertone-inspired lines but adds a “Modern Solid” flair. Slavov didn’t stop there—he transformed it into a pseudo-electric crossover, drawing subtle comparisons to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Unlike many recent Skodas, he skipped the brand’s usual Tech-Deck Face. It’s a smart move: the original Favorit’s front was simple, and the concept mirrors that simplicity with slim LED headlights under translucent covers, echoing the classic look.

Skoda’s all-electric version is coming too: It might be able to race

Other details make the car feel fresh yet familiar: “shared” door handles, concave wheels, a floating roof, a sculpted C-pillar, and illuminated “SKODA” lettering at the rear. For the racing-minded, Slavov even imagined a sportier version of the iconic European car. It comes with bold bumpers, chunky cladding, a larger rear spoiler, a prominent diffuser, and a quick-release hood, hinting at some track-ready potential.

Other companies are also investing in creating an autosport version of the technology that should be used in daily-use vehicles. The Chinese manufacturer Geely did it with hydrogen, and the project is heading to its own championship in the future.

Sometimes, the auto sport industry runs out of ideas and tries to bring back an old model with upgraded technology – and this is what’s happening with the European brand now.
