Delays in the car manufacturer industry are common, and even though a highly anticipated car can get a new deadline based on the current challenges the automaker is going through, sometimes other factors have a big role, such as a new industry trend, technology they want to test, or a new design that previously did not work but now could. Many outcomes are possible for many possibilities. Now, this mythical brand has a new release date revealed.

Iconic collaboration in Japan: The market will be affected

In the car manufacturing industry, one of the reasons why a new engine is not coming out sooner is the need to use renewable sources of fuel to power the machine. The world cannot take much longer with carbon emissions through the roof, and for this reason, not only traditional brands from Japan are leading the innovation, but other European and American brands are also going for this new market – take Tesla, for example.

There is not much meaning behind this one, just a simple answer: they want to do it right. That is the mindset of the best car manufacturers in the world. And when two major brands in their industries join efforts to land a car that could reshape the current collaborations between other companies, everybody pays attention.

Sony and Honda are changing the landscape in Japan

The electric Afeela 1 – born from the partnership between Japan-based Honda and Sony – is already in pre-production at Honda’s East Liberty plant in Ohio. Honda is focusing on panel gaps, paint quality, and precision in the build process. The attention to detail comes at the right time, especially after the rough starts of models like Fisker’s Ocean and VinFast’s VF8.

First revealed at CES 2023, the Afeela 1 is now taking $200 refundable reservations. Two trims are coming: the Signature, at $102,900, will be first, followed by the Origin, at $89,900. Deliveries are expected to start in mid-2026. The Signature gets 21-inch wheels, rear-seat entertainment, and a camera system in the cabin. Across the lineup, the Afeela packs 40 sensors – cameras, lidar, radar, and ultrasonic. Add in AI systems, active noise-canceling, and spatial audio, and it is clear where Sony left its mark.

The market competition: Afeela will compete with traditional brands

Pricing includes a three-year subscription to some connected features, but at these numbers, the Afeela is targeting a narrow market to compete with famous manufacturers like Lucid, Rivian, or Tesla. Another brand that is getting bigger in the industry, as they have a large catalogue of models, is BYD.

The Chinese manufacturer is already controlling some regional markets in Europe and is the most sold electric and hybrid cars in South America. It’s too soon to say that Afeela will be a hit, but as the people and specialized media start to get their hands on the car for a test drive, expect more good things and complaints. The car won’t be exclusive to Japan, and in 2026, the new Afeela 1 Sedan will arrive in the United States.

Under the hood is even better: Silent power for hundreds of miles

Under the skin, the Afeela is straightforward: dual motors producing 483 horsepower combined, all-wheel drive, about 300 miles of range, and a 91-kWh battery pack. Honda is differentiating itself in this project, but continues with the goal of ending carbon emissions in a decade. The company has been actively working on a hydrogen engine, making collaborations and developing new ways to make this work and give buyers options beyond the full electric powertrain or hybrid systems – a trend even Lamborghini is adapting to.

The famous Japan-based automaker will have to delay one of its main projects until 2026.
