The city-emirate is known for its international status, economic independence, and autonomous nature, and has shocked the world with its transformation. It boasts the biggest man-made island in the world, Palm Jumeirah, and now, it features photovoltaic palms that promise street power and a sci-fi skyline. Dubai has decided to look beyond oil, and we could not be any more intrigued by its decision. Could this be the future of lighting?

This is why Dubai has decided to look beyond oil

In 1966, a crucial discovery marked a turning point for the economy, as it ended an economy extremely dependent on trade and pearling. The offshore Fateh oil field was discovered, and according to DAMAC Properties, it had the following effect:

Enough funds for significant infrastructure projects, such as roads, airports, ports, and landmark developments like the Burj Khalifa and Palm Jumeirah

Diversifying the economy by investing oil revenues in real estate, finance, and tourism

Development of Dubai as a global hub for trade, business, and leisure

Since the economic boom, Dubai has looked beyond oil, and while it may still play a significant role in its economy, the role is much smaller. Ironically, it took a fossil fuel to enable the modern metropolis to decrease its hydrocarbon dependency. According to the Government of Dubai Media Office, Dubai now has a 2030 Climate Target in place, which aims to cut carbon emissions by 50% by then.

The city plans on doing so by combining smart technology with renewables, and a recent example features its photovoltaic palms.

Photovoltaic palms to power the streets

There have been many breakthroughs in solar power in the last decade, including this ultra-thin paper that can make anything photovoltaic. But this particular design in Dubai is new. The “smart palm” can be seen across Dubai on beaches and public areas. They are man-made Solar Palms that are eco-friendly and self-sustainable, and they feature so much more than the ability to power the streets.

How they work

The top of the leaves is layered with multiple DSSC-based solar modules. The bottom is a single luminescent sheet that emits full-surface lighting. These trees can be altered to any palm type without hindering energy absorption. Excess energy can be stored in a hidden accumulator located in the tree’s base. This energy powers the leaves, which create lighting.

These futuristic palm trees are about more than just lighting

According to Inhabitat, these futuristic palm trees are about more than just lighting the streets. They have extreme benefits due to the following factors:

They can operate in poor sun angles and partial shadows

They have increased efficiency

Their manufacturing is cost-effective

They can store energy in an accumulator for later use

Additional features as per designboom.com

Free WiFi

Available to visitors in proximity

Security and emergency features

Each tree has a 360-degree infrared CCTV camera and an emergency button

Touch screen and smart info application

Each tree offers city information, a dedicated website, and mobile apps

Digital outdoor screen

Space for public messages, government notices, and commercial advertisements

Relax points and battery recharge stations

Features seating areas that can charge electronics 2.5 times faster than conventional stations

The world can take a page from Dubai’s playbook. The city-emirate may have been a big contributor to the use of fossil fuels in the past, but since then, Dubai has shown its commitment not only to keeping up with technology advancements, but also to incorporating renewable technologies and reducing its carbon footprint. But they are not the only ones. Hopefully, we will be seeing more green initiatives, as this massive discovery could make this country the “new Dubai.”

One of the most unique places in the world is Dubai.
