Make sure you’ve taken the appropriate safety measures to prepare for the extreme cold before it gets too cold. This is a list of three things you should never leave in your car when it’s chilly outside.

Electronics: They are not designed to handle below-freezing temperatures

One might think that the overheating of electric devices is an issue, not perceiving that when these electronics are below freezing temperatures, then it poses a safety threat. Extreme cold conditions drain and undoubtedly damage the battery; lithium batteries are not a fan of the cold. For handheld gadgets, particularly those with LCD panels or lithium-ion batteries, extremely high or low temperatures are not optimal.

Although Apple advises against using iPhones in below-freezing temperatures, we own a lot more gadgets than just phones. Remember your tablets, fitness monitors, cameras, Bluetooth headphones, and even your bike lights. It is crucial to comprehend how these electronics are harmed and affected by the cold. It is not a myth, but something to take seriously.

Be careful to bring your electronics, including your phone and tablets, inside. Lithium-ion batteries cease to discharge electricity when they become sufficiently cold. Repeated exposure is not advised, but once they warm up again, everything should return to normal. Therefore, ensure you keep them in a warm-temperature place to avoid damage in the short or long run.

Liquids in bottles: A liquid may freeze and then explode

I personally did not know that liquids can freeze and then burst because of extremely cold weather conditions. It should not come as a surprise, but for me it has. When frozen, canned or bottled liquids expand. In the event of a deep freeze, a can left in your car is likely to expand and maybe explode. Get rid of these things before it gets too chilly to avoid the cleanup.

Medication: Your prescribed medication is not immune to the cold temperatures

According to an article by Jalopnik (2024), the effectiveness of your medications may be adversely affected by the excessive cold. Particularly insulin, which is extremely crucial to the individual it is prescribed for and prone to severe temperatures. Extreme temperatures don’t affect all drugs, so be sure to ask your doctor or chemist any questions you may have regarding your prescriptions.

Examine almost any label; the majority of medications advise consumers to store them in a dry, cool environment. It doesn’t fit your frigid car very well. Most drugs will deteriorate in severe temperatures, according to the Wexner Medical Center. Certain drugs will lose their effectiveness. Others may result in uneven dosage and lose their originality to cure any illness one might be having.

One might think that a big freeze only affects your vehicle, such as batteries and the engine; however, there are many more items that you keep in your car that can get damaged. Unexpected items such as your wooden guitar (musical instruments), eggs, eyeglasses, and many more are threatened by the cold temperatures; therefore, it is your duty to ensure you keep them in a warm-to-cool temperature room/location.

Winter is upon the United States and because of the big freeze that is at hand, it can possibly harm not only your vehicle but the items that you might leave inside.
