The region demands that the driver goes slower in order to not hurt anyone, and still, thousands of children get hurt every year due to reckless driving, but not anymore. Multiple states are implementing cameras to catch infractors and start to send fines for each violation, and it only gets worse as it goes. The measures will take effect on September 11 for the 2024-2025 school year. Trying to catch speeders in these zones is a mission that many states are trying to accomplish.

New rules against speeding in school zone: New bill is now in effect

Driving at a speed higher than the permitted speed, and sometimes the speed allowed in the area is already dangerous, could cause irreparable damage to the child who gets hit by a car. With that in mind, Connecticut was one of the first states to start tracking the infractors using cameras. At the same time, other states were developing their own version of the law.

With the driving standards changing all over the country with new laws about sitting in the left lane, no cellphone or any other device while driving, speed limits getting lower or higher in specific stretches, some things can get lost in translation, which might cause the state authorities to hand out more fines than they were anticipating. Meanwhile, these fines would also pay for the cameras and other investments. Now, it’s time for Tallahassee to implement a new law.

Tallahassee’s driving rules will change: Fines started on September 11

Florida’s state capital has launched the Tallahassee’s School Zone Camera Safety Program to keep kids safer near schools. Backed by House Bill 657, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis in May 2023, the program puts cameras in exclusive areas to catch drivers going over the limit. The new rule kicks in for the 2024-2025 school year. The fines started being issued on September 11.

According to the new bill, cameras will run throughout the entire day in Tallahassee, though the hours depend on each learning institute’s schedule. By law, enforcement applies from thirty minutes before and after breakfast programs, through the entire day, and again thirty minutes before and after dismissal (like in these states, but with tougher consequences).

Drivers will have options to choose from: It depends on the situation

Drivers caught speeding have three options. They can pay the fine within thirty days, request a hearing, or file an affidavit if someone else was driving. If handled within the notice period, the violation won’t affect a license, registration, or insurance. Ignoring it, though, and it turns into a Florida Uniform Traffic Citation.

Paying a Notice of Violation won’t hurt your insurance or driver’s license. It’s treated as a civil penalty, not something that shows up on your driving record. If you’re the registered owner but weren’t the one driving at the time, you’re still the person who receives the notice.

On the other hand, Florida law allows you to file a written affidavit naming who actually had the car when the violation happened. Once that’s done, the responsibility can be shifted to the correct driver. Just remember – the affidavit has to identify the person who was behind the wheel for the notice to be re-issued.

Other school zone measures in multiple states: Waiting is better

Drivers across the U.S. will need to watch out for school buses this year, with tougher stop-arm laws now in place. The rules aren’t exactly the same everywhere, but one thing doesn’t change – if a bus has its stop arm out, you can’t pass it. Another rule for the area in Connecticut has authorities installing an automated speed camera on a busy stretch of one of the U.S. most famous roads.

The areas in which most accidents happen are often the school zones.
