In fact, if you spend an average of one hour per day in your car in the United States, that averages out to roughly 290 hours a year. America has become the home of the motor vehicle industry for a litany of car manufacturers. However, a problem arises for those who spend an inordinate amount of time on the road: how does one communicate with the outside world while driving?

Driving while using a phone has become extremely dangerous in the USA

Anyone who has spent even a small amount of time driving anywhere in the United States can attest to the dangers of using a cellphone while driving. In 2023, the number of deaths that were a direct result of people using their phones while driving was 3,275. Astonishing to think that if people merely took the time to consider the danger, those people might still be with us.

Several US states have enacted new measures to prevent drivers from using their phones while on the road. From everyday car drivers to the huge and cumbersome trucks that litter the deserted roads of the nation, driving while using a cellphone can get you into some serious trouble. Now, one state in the US has passed a bill to officially make the penalty harsher for those who call or text while driving.

The Hands-Free Bill has passed muster in the American state of Iowa

Iowa is not necessarily known for dangerous roads, but we have all seen the videos of drivers merely glancing at an incoming text or adjusting the settings on their GPS, leading them down a path of destruction. Iowa passed a bill called the Hands-Free Driving Law in April, which then came into effect on July 1, 2025. Since then, regional government officials have been educating the public on what this new law might mean for them.

State officials have urged drivers not to use their phones while driving, or face the might of Johnny Law

While the law came into effect in Iowa in July, a warning period has been granted that will last until January 1, 2026, allowing Iowans the time to drill the law into their brains. The Iowa Department of Public Safety, the Iowa State Patrol, and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau have been working together to try to educate the public about the new Hands-Free Law.

Iowa’s new Hands-Free Law prevents drivers from using their phones in any shape or form while on the road, even when stopped in traffic or at a set of traffic lights. The penalties for doing so can result in fines reaching $500 or more, depending on the seriousness of the infraction. The Iowa Department of Public Safety has urged drivers to use either a phone mount, an auxiliary cable, or even their phone’s speaker feature while driving to avoid being penalized.

“Iowa’s new hands-free law marks a pivotal moment in our fight against distracted driving; it’s an unprecedented opportunity to fundamentally change driver behavior. By embracing this change, we can drastically reduce fatalities and serious injuries on our roads, making Iowa safer for everyone.” – Brett Tjepkes with the GTSB

The warning period ends in the new year, as noted by state officials

Change is a constant, especially in the mobility sector in the United States. Several states have enacted new laws pertaining to the rules and regulations for their drivers, and the new Hands Free Law makes Iowa the 31st state in the nation to enact the hands-free driving legislation, marking a turning point for the state’s drivers. The warning period will end in the new year, on January 1, so be sure to get the details and buy your phone mount for your car to avoid the might of the Iowa police and authorities.

Due to the sheer vastness of the United States, most people spend a good part of their lifetime in their cars as drivers or vehicles on the road.
