Driving around the great state of Texas comes with a wide variety of challenges and issues for the public. With winter coming to an end in the near future, spring will bring with it an influx of new drivers that will increase the number of cars on the roads of the United States. Vehicle registration is an important step in the process of acquiring a new car; however, some Republicans in Texas have raised some relevant concerns over the registration process.

The Lone Star State is set to make a significant change to the vehicle registration process

Texas has seen some terrible crash statistics in recent years. The Lone Star State regularly tops the crash statistics in the United States, with data revealing that upwards of 4,000 fatalities occur annually in Texas. The sheer size of the state means that policing it can often be a challenge for even the most seasoned law enforcement officers; thankfully, the DMV has revealed a significant change this year.

The Department of Motor Vehicles has recently announced that this year will see a drastic change in the vehicle registration process. Effective immediately, vehicle registration now requires a valid photo ID to complete the registration process, with dealerships around Texas being notified that any new purchases need to be accompanied by an actual photo ID.

The Texas DMV is aiming to reduce the number of illegal immigrants on its roads

That is the aim of the significant changes made by the Texas DMV. Every year, thousands of illegal immigrants obtain a vehicle registration despite not being legally allowed to do so, or even being in the US at all. The DMV has stated that a current, valid photo ID is required when purchasing a new vehicle or renewing the registration for an older one.

The Texas DMV has provided a list of approved IDs for vehicle registration

The new law came into effect in November of last year and has raised concerns by human rights groups over the impact it may have on the thousands of immigrants in Texas, all of whom are simply trying to provide for their families. The Texas DMV has notified the public that several official IDs will be accepted for vehicle registration, including:

Texas driver’s license

an unexpired U.S. passport

Texas License To Carry identification

IDs issued by the U.S. military

IDs issued by the Department of Homeland Security

IDs issued by the Citizenship and Immigration Services

IDs issued by the Department of State

Texas has also implemented a few changes to the issuing of driver’s licenses, so if you or anyone you know is in need of a new license or vehicle registration, be sure to check if you have the correct form of identification according to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. The reality is that the DMV is trying to clamp down on the number of ineligible drivers and vehicles on its roads.

Overcrowding on US roads has led to some significant reforms in some states

There can be no doubt that the US sees way too much congestion on its roads. Overcrowding on US roads and highways can lead to a world of issues for the everyday person merely trying to go about their daily life. With New York City implementing a new policy to address overcrowding, Texas is aiming to follow suit and has implemented the changes regarding vehicle registration in the Lone Star State, which has gone down well with Republicans in the state. Will more states follow the example? Only time will tell.

Texas has seen its DMV make some significant changes to the vehicle registration rules.
