The funds are being distributed under the ANCHOR Tax Relief Program and you can read about the eligibility criteria, application process, and payment dates in February below.

Stimulus Checks are being paid to New Jersey renters and homeowners

The ANCHOR (Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters) program aims to provide financial relief to renters and homeowners in New Jersey as the state experiences rising housing costs and property taxes. These place economic strain on both property owners (who have to pay more tax) and renters (who have to pay higher rental rates to cover owners’ increased costs).

New Jersey has some of the highest property taxes in the United States. Residents find it hard to keep up with high housing expenses, so the ANCHOR initiative was instituted to ease the burden. Both renters and homeowners are the target recipients of the funding from the New Jersey Division of Taxation and both are eligible to receive help in maintaining housing stability.

This is the second round of ANCHOR payments and the program is building upon previous tax relief efforts, increasing the benefits amounts and opening the funding up to a wider pool of eligible New Jersey residents. The aim is to put money back into the pockets of middle-class and low-income residents who feel the pressure of rising costs the most.

What is the value of the Stimulus Checks and when will they be paid out?

The New Jersey Division of Taxation’s application deadline for the ANCHOR Tax Relief Program was November 30, 2024, and anyone who missed that date will unfortunately not be receiving a Stimulus Check.

Up to $1,750 was made available to homeowners and the amount for renters was $700.

The payments started being distributed in January 2025. There were two options for payment processing: direct deposit or paper check via post. Those beneficiaries who opted to have funds deposited directly in their bank accounts will have received their funds in January. The postal system takes longer, and these recipients may only receive their checks in February.

For those who missed out on this round of Stimulus Checks, it’s advisable to stay informed about future relief programs by regularly checking the official New Jersey government website for updates about future funding programs.

There’s another tax credit available to Americans, the Child Tax Credit, and qualifying parents and guardians could receive up to $2,000 per child.

Eligibility criteria for the ANCHOR Tax Relief Program

There were separate criteria for the assessment of homeowners and renters.

Eligibility criteria for homeowners

Income: The annual household income limit was $250,000. There was a payment tier applied according to income: those earning up to $150,000 qualified for the full $1,750 and those who earned above that and up to $250,000 were paid $1,000.

Residency: Homeowners must have owned and occupied their New Jersey residence as of October 1, 2024, or before and this must be their primary residence.

Exclusions: Second homes, rental properties, and vacation homes did not qualify under the ANCHOR program.

Eligibility criteria for renters

Income: Only renters with a maximum income of $150,000 per year were eligible and the Stimulus Check amount was $450 for those under the age of 65. An additional $250 was paid to senior renters aged 65 and above, making it $700.

Residency: Applicants must have rented and lived in their New Jersey residence as of October 1, 2024.

If you applied for funding under the ANCHOR program but haven’t received your payment yet, or if you’d just like to check your status, you can visit the official New Jersey Division of Taxation website and click on the ANCHOR Program tab.

In other news about tax refunds that applies to all United States taxpayers, the payment of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) refunds was delayed.

New Jersey homeowners and renters are benefiting from a round of Stimulus Checks of up to $1,750 that started being paid out in January 2025, according to the New Jersey Department of the Treasury.
