High waves, strong winds, and constant motion make offshore engineering difficult.

Engineers sought to determine whether solar panels could operate that far offshore.

However, it didn’t take long for an unusual group of visitors to appear at the floating solar platform.

The seals repeatedly climbed onto the floating solar farm whenever the sea became calm.

Why had they made the floating platform one of their regular stopping places?

Building a solar farm where the sea never stops moving

While traditional solar farms are generally constructed on dry land, the North Sea does not offer a similar level of stability. The area is exposed to powerful winter storms and large swells generated by strong winds.

Building anything that can withstand those conditions is a significant challenge.

Those conditions led to the creation of the North Sea Two Project.

Approximately twelve kilometers offshore of the Netherlands sits a floating solar farm. It was designed to determine whether solar panels could produce power in some of Europe’s harshest environmental conditions.

After enduring multiple harsh winters and severe storms, the testing now provides valuable new data for future offshore solar farms.

In addition to generating renewable energy, scientists were interested in how local marine life would respond to the project. The installation introduced a brand-new structure into the marine environment.

Researchers wanted to see what would happen next.

Something unexpected began happening around the platforms

Scientists tracked the floating solar farm and the surrounding waters for nearly four years. They monitored water circulation, food chains, seabirds, and marine mammals.

Two important things soon became apparent.

In addition to generating electric power, Oceans of Energy wanted to know how the offshore array would affect its surroundings.

There was no significant alteration in local currents and mixing due to the presence of the solar farm.

Additionally, marine organisms rapidly began to make use of the underside of the floating structures.

Wageningen University & Research reported that mussels, barnacles, and other species had begun growing beneath the platform shortly after it was built.

The platforms provided a new habitat in an area with very little hard surface for marine animals to attach to. A total of 47 species were documented using the structures.

However, the influence extended beyond the water.

Gulls, grey seals, and common seals were all observed visiting the structure.

The animals continued returning to the floating solar farm.

The floating platforms offered something else entirely

The answer had nothing to do with electricity.

The platforms offered the seals a place to leave the water. There, they could rest for a while before continuing their journey.

Grey and common seals repeatedly used the structures during calm conditions.

The pattern became clearer over time

As the weather conditions improved, the pattern became clearer.

During larger waves and harsher conditions, the seals moved from the platforms back into open water. Birds followed a similar pattern.

Instead of remaining at the installation, they generally used the floating structures during calmer periods.

The data suggests that the offshore solar farm has become part of the surrounding marine ecosystem instead of remaining just another energy facility.

While larger offshore solar facilities still require further study, this project represents one of the first attempts to examine these systems. It provides insight into how floating solar installations and marine life may coexist over time.

This solar farm was built to test renewable energy in one of the world’s most challenging marine environments.

In the end, the seals found their own way to use the new floating solar farm.

Floating solar farms are exposed to some of the harshest weather conditions in the North Sea.
