It has become a vital tool for farmers.

They use it to decide when to plant crops, move equipment, and prepare for changing weather.

Then significant amounts of rain began appearing on radar near a major Victorian wind farm.

Because of those images, everyone thought more rain would soon arrive. However, despite the large areas of rain shown on the radar, the ground never received any rain.

This raised an obvious question: what were people actually seeing on the radar?

Rain that never reached the ground

The Murra Warra Wind Farm is located in rural western Victoria. Vast stretches of land in the area are used for growing crops.

As such, weather forecasts have a huge impact on the day-to-day activities of local farmers.

Like other modern wind farms, this location was developed to capitalize on strong seasonal winds. These winds are used to produce electricity from renewable energy sources.

Local farmers regularly relied on weather radar when planning work around the wind farm.

Then something unusual started happening.

Large patches of color appeared on weather radar near the Murra Warra Wind Farm. They made it look as though rain clouds were moving into the area. Because of this image, farmers and meteorologists alike believed rain was coming.

However, after looking out the window, they found that it was just a beautiful sunny day with no signs of rain.

Despite no rain falling, the weather radar continued to show precipitation.

Why did the false rain keep appearing?

Initially, it seemed there may have been errors in the radar’s operation.

Weather radar is highly accurate and helps forecasters predict storms and other severe weather events across Australia.

Repeatedly, radar imagery displayed colored regions of false precipitation near the wind farm, raising concern due to their frequency. The false rainfall signatures continued appearing even when conditions on the ground stayed clear.

Farmers using Elders Weather’s radar would have seen the same unusual radar imagery during these events.

Attention soon shifted to finding out why the radar was showing something unlike typical precipitation.

Echoes disguised as rainfall

The explanation had nothing to do with precipitation. Instead, the Murra Warra weather radar detected echoes that appeared as false rainfall imagery.

Radar normally detects beams bouncing off raindrops in the air. In this case, the wind turbines themselves were causing strong echoes (or signals). Each blade and tower produced powerful reflection signals back toward the radar unit.

These signals behaved very similarly to those that occur when radar detects heavy precipitation.

Meteorologists typically refer to these false returns as “clutter.” The term is used because they can obscure legitimate data during normal radar operations. To anyone scanning the radar, the colored patches looked like developing showers moving across agricultural land.

As a result, those echoes could easily be mistaken for real precipitation.

No rain was falling; only large objects were creating echoes on the radar screens.

This misunderstanding created obvious frustration and uncertainty for farmers.

The unusual radar readings appeared during periods when farmers regularly monitored weather conditions.

They were trying to determine when rain would eventually arrive.

When turbines start appearing on radar

Wind farms will likely remain a source of clean power throughout Australia. Occasionally, they interact with other sophisticated technologies in unforeseen ways. The Murra Warra Wind Farm became another example of how large wind turbines can distort radar images under certain conditions.

The colorful patches resembled approaching rain clouds.

In reality, they were reflections created by the spinning turbine structures.

Similar projects are revealing how infrastructure can influence the technology used to monitor it.

The technology behind weather radar has been designed to locate rain being moved across the land.
