The EV market saw notable growth in 2024, with several new records being set. The global shift toward sustainable transportation is leveling up as more drivers adopt cleaner alternatives to traditional gasoline or diesel combustion engines, and Americans are doing their part.

The US electric vehicle market and performance in 2024

Around 1.3 million EVs were sold in the United States in 2024, which is 7.3% more than the sales in the previous year. In the fourth quarter of last year, 8.7% of new light-duty vehicles were electric, and the previous quarter showed similar market performance.

Tesla remains the top-selling brand, however, its market share declined to 44% in 2024, down from 50% in 2023 and 65% in 2022. This is an indication of the strength of the increasing competition in the sector, especially from Asian manufacturers.

The Top 10 Bestselling EVs of 2025

Below is the ranking of the best electric cars, SUVs, and pickups available in the US, according to U.S. News & World Report. You’ll predictably find Tesla at the top, but some of the other high-performing models may come as a surprise. Who knows? Your next vehicle could be on this list.

Tesla Model Y

The 2025 Tesla Model Y SUV scored 8.4 out of 10 in the U.S. News & World Report ranking of the top EVs, making it the best on offer in the American market. It’s priced at $44,990 and outsold the next most popular model on the list by a wide margin of more than 260,000 units.

The Model Y delivers a range of up to 337 miles with sporty handling and rapid acceleration. The downside of this Tesla is an uncomfortably harsh ride quality, depending on the suspension and wheels fitted.

Tesla Model 3

The next best-selling EV is another Tesla, the 2025 Model 3. The sedan scored a 9.2 out of 10 and is a good choice for drivers who don’t need a sports utility vehicle at a price of $42,490.

The Model 3 has a sporty nature encompassing high performance and top-level tech. Acceleration and handling are decent and the range is 363 miles. Unfortunately, braking at high speeds is less responsive than some of Tesla’s competitors.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

The 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E scored 9.0 out of 10 and is third on the list of top-selling EVs in the US. It comes in at a price of $36,495 and is described as both practical and sporty with its SUV body style.

The acceleration and handling are as impressive as you’d expect from a Mustang and drivers report that the performance is strong. However, the ride can be somewhat firm and the brake pedals feel soft, even though the braking quality is what it should be.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

The first Asian vehicle on the list is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 with an overall score of 9.1 out of 10. The 2025 model has a price tag of $42,500, around the same as the Tesla Model 3 sedan, but this SUV is bigger.

The Ioniq 5 offers multiple driver configurations and delivers high performance on all of them. A new kind of charger port and higher battery capacity have been added. Passengers report that the seats in all rows are supportive and higher trims come with some extra comforts.

Honda Prologue

The 2025 Prologue is Honda’s first EV and it’s done amazingly well to be the fifth top-selling EV. It comes in at a price of $47,400, making it more expensive than all the models above. Its score is lower, though, at 7.6 out of 10.

Drivers report that the ride quality is high despite slightly lower performance than expected from the Japanese carmaker. The Prologue is available in single and dual-motor options and offers a range of up to 296 miles.

Tesla Model X

The third Tesla in the ranking is the 2025 Model X with a score of 8.2 out of 10. Tesla hasn’t changed much in the new Model X but it’s still popular. It’s priced at $79,900, the most expensive of the 10 top-selling electric vehicles.

The Model X has a spacious cabin, a great range at 335 miles, and speedy performance. Ride quality is reportedly stiff at times, especially if drivers choose the 22-inch wheels, but acceleration delivers everything a driver wants.

Cadillac Lyriq

Cadillac’s 2025 Lyriq scored a decent 8.5 out of 10 and is priced at $58,595. The traditional luxury associated with the brand is housed in a modern sport utility format and comfort was high on the design team’s priorities.

The Lyriq maintains its high performance and competent handling even with the optional bigger wheels. There’s a dual-motor option available with a higher power output. The range to expect is around 326 miles.

Rivian R1S

This lesser-known brand’s 2025 R1S is one of the surprises on the list of bestselling EVs. It’s a second-generation SUV with a bit of a truck feel, and the Rivian scored an impressive 9.1 out of 10. The price is on the high end at $75,900, but owners report that it’s worth it for the top-notch driver experience.

The R1S has more offroad capacity than other SUVs in its class and the automaker offers a choice of two, three, or four drive motors with three battery packs. This means that drivers can prioritize either acceleration or range depending on how the vehicle is used. Horsepower reaches up to 1,025, which means that acceleration is great.

Tesla Cybertruck

Although the 2025 Cybertruck has received some less-than-sterling reviews, it’s still the ninth-best-selling EV in the United States and scored 8.2 out of 10. The price is $79,990 for this unique, futuristic, pickup-inspired, angular metal tank.

The standard model comes with two drive motors, but a third is optional if you are prepared to spend more. The Cybertruck delivers strong acceleration with a smooth ride and fair maneuverability despite its above-average bulk. Tesla reports that the maximum range is 325 miles.

Kia EV9

The Kia brand has been growing steadily in the American vehicle market and its EV9 is a winner with a score of 8.9 out of 10. The 2025 model is priced at $54,900 and is the largest of Kia’s electric offerings. The EV9 has three rows of seats with enough space for nine people.

It’s reported that the EV9 has a greater focus on comfort than performance, but its acceleration is decent and the suspension tuning is balanced. A maximum range of 304 miles can be expected, which is not bad considering its size.

What can we expect from the global EV market?

The global EV market was valued at around $418.2 billion in 2024, and projections indicate strong continued growth driven by an annual compound growth rate of 21.99% through 2050.

These rapidly growing sales trends reflect the evolution of the electric vehicle market, and further growth and development in terms of technological innovations, sustainability policies in the transport sector, and increased adoption by the public.

It’s also possible that other forms of carbon-free vehicle drivetrains start to gain in the sector, such as hydrogen, and China is already on its way with the development of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

The bestselling EVs have been ranked according to U.S. News & World Report and it’s an insightful indication of which brands are performing well in the United States electric vehicle market.
