The program would see $3 billion in total paid out to around 8.6 million New Yorkers and the funds would be drawn from the sales tax revenue generated from inflation.

Governor Kathy Hochul has New Yorkers’ best financial interests at heart

Democrat Kathy Hochul, who is the 57th Governor of New York after the resignation of Andrew Cuomo and the first woman to hold the position, has been in office since 2021 and is facing re-election next year in 2026. In addition to easing the pressure of inflation on New Yorkers’ pockets, Hochul focuses on issues like infrastructure, climate change, and public safety.

To date, Kathy Hochul has distributed more than $5.5 billion to New Yorkers through supplemental payments, tax relief, and rebates since taking office.

Hochul’s first proposal put forward during her State of the State address was the Inflation Refund. She aims to pay out $300 to individual taxpayers and $500 to couples who file jointly. My agenda for the coming year will be laser-focused on putting money back in your pockets, and that starts with proposing Inflation Refund checks of up to $500 to help millions of hard-working New Yorkers. It’s simple: the cost of living is still too damn high, and New Yorkers deserve a break.”

District Council 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido endorsed Governor Hochul’s initiatives:

“It is clear from the many conversations with our members that the rising cost of living remains the greatest challenge facing working New Yorkers.
