The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, has expressed anger and disbelief at protests against his automotive company Tesla, inspired by political tensions in the USA. With a net worth of at least $320 billion and a position as US President Donald Trump’s right-hand man, Musk has come under fire since the presidential campaign trail. Now, Tesla dealerships and cars are being vandalised<\/strong> across the country, and Musk has sounded off on the recent events. It’s also not clear who’s behind the movement.<\/p>\n

Musk is under fire, but how did we get here?<\/h2>\n

It’s safe to say that the geopolitical climate in North America is uncertain at the moment, but there is definitely some dissatisfaction with the new leadership. This is nothing new for the USA, as the country saw the January 6th insurrection before Former President Joe Biden was inaugurated. Now, in light of Trump’s election and Elon Musk’s position as a “special government employee,” protests have taken on a new shape.<\/p>\n

Nationwide, protestors are vandalising Tesla dealerships, setting fire to Tesla charging stations<\/strong>, and damaging Tesla vehicles. It begs the question: Are protestors targeting Tesla in protest of the automotive company itself, or are they sending a strong message to Elon Musk? According to Musk, the answer is obvious. He weighed in on the issue recently and had strong words:<\/p>\n

“I always thought that the left, you know, Democrats, were supposed to be the party of empathy, the party of caring, and yet they’re burning down cars, they’re firebombing dealerships, they’re firing bullets into dealerships, they’re smashing up Teslas,” Musk said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Musk and Tesla under a microscope<\/h2>\n

The protestors themselves have been very clear about their intentions from the start. The “Tesla Takedown” movement started on Bluesky, which is a decentralized alternative to X (formerly known as Twitter) \u2014 X being the platform that Elon Musk bought in 2022. The movement implored Tesla<\/a> owners to get rid of their cars<\/strong>, and a key motive for the grassroots initiative is to “Stop Musk Now”.<\/p>\n

For the most part, the movement has been relatively successful as Tesla stocks took a major hit, with shares trading 44% below their peak<\/a> from December. Tesla sales across Europe have also dropped significantly recently. Arguably, potential owners are simply protecting their own safety by avoiding Musk’s near-trillion-dollar baby. However, the South African-born billionaire will be well aware that competitors are lying in wait.<\/p>\n

Is there a bigger conspiracy behind the Tesla protests?<\/h2>\n

Musk has also suggested that there may be a larger conspiracy at play, suggesting that this is more than just a protest. “I mean, I don’t know, who’s funding it and who’s coordinating it? Because this is crazy. I’ve never seen anything like this,” he stated. On his X platform, he went even further by claiming, “There is no doubt that shooting bullets into Tesla stores and burning down Superchargers are acts of terrorism.”<\/p>\n

Indeed, violence is violence, and vandalism is vandalism. However, it must be said that Musk’s suggestion that there is a larger plot being funded by someone is not backed by any evidence<\/strong>. Additionally, the administration that he is a part of pardoned 1,500 criminal defendants charged in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. This story is equal parts political crisis and automotive industry scandal.<\/p>\n

A company as large as Tesla, led by a man as powerful as Elon Musk, should survive this movement, even though the situation is presently worrying. The keyword there is “should”. Since January, not a day has gone by without a headline about Musk and Trump. The markets are always going to respond to new stories that are this sensational, but they usually tend to rebound.
