The future of automobiles and racing is ever-changing, and the latest innovations seem so futuristic that the title of “petrolhead” could soon become archaic. With even bigger plans coming in 2026, here’s how race cars are evolving into mean, green machines.

A shocking engine, yet no electric motor?

There’s no rest for the weary when it comes to Chinese car companies, as Geely Galaxy, a Geely Auto brand focused primarily on EVs, has unveiled a methanol-powered race car. It isn’t just hot air either, their car has already been successfully tested in brisk conditions.

The race car is decked out with an Aurobay-DHE20TDM methanol engine, also developed by Geely, under the hood. It runs on M100 methanol fuel, which is nominally anhydrous methyl alcohol that has minimal additives. The fuel is also compliant with China’s National VI-B emission standards.

Remarkably, this car’s performance matches up (and can even exceed) the standards of its petrol-powered equals. Geely is preparing to put the car through the wringer in various circuits, which should give us a clearer picture of how adaptable and resilient the race car is.

Geely’s on an unprecedented run of success

Geely Galaxy Rise has made its parent brand an even more powerful player in the automotive industry. In its launch year in 2023, the company sold 83,497 vehicles. That number jumped an insane 492% in 2024, with the company reporting sales of 494,440 vehicles. The numbers are simply mind-boggling.

The rapid rise of the Galaxy brand

ThinkerCar, an automobile consulting institution that reports data on the industry, reported on X that “The Geely Galaxy brand has experienced rapid growth, rising from outside the top 10 NEV brand rankings in 2022 to 6th place in 2024, surpassing brands such as Chery and Changan.”

What’s next for the automaker?

In 2025, the automaker is aiming for 1 million sales. Geely Galaxy has already reported combined sales of 169,677 vehicles for January and February. At this rate, without accounting for a potential spike during the calendar, they should sell 1,018,062 cars by the end of December. That would represent 1119.66% growth from 2023.

Soon, Geely Galaxy will launch their highly anticipated “Geely Super Cup PRO” series, which will feature an entire range of methanol-powered race cars. Interestingly, the Geely Galaxy’s parent company has been eyed as a potential 12th team in Formula 1, with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem being keen on the idea.

China’s world-leading green domination

China has been stamping its authority in many industries for decades now, but recently, its ambitions have gone into overdrive. Geely has plans to expand to new markets in Europe, Africa, and South America. Reuters has reported that Geely will start sales in the UK in the first half of 2025 through its Farizon brand.

They also have their sights set on Africa, with plans to return to South Africa, having left the country about ten years ago. The natural assumption is that Geely’s rise will only accelerate, and with most countries looking towards EVs and vehicles that use cleaner fuel sources, the Chinese automaker is well-positioned.

It’s a major flex to launch a methanol-powered engine in a race car by testing it in the harshest conditions, and Geely has certainly shown its muscle with its latest vehicle. The fact that this is only the tip of the iceberg suggests that their competitors should watch their backs. Not only is Geely on the rise, but China’s automakers and renewable energy players are making their presence felt as a collective.

Not satisfied with their recent dominance in the electric vehicle (EV) market, an automaker in China has showcased a race car with a remarkable engine that runs on methanol.
