That puts the state’s vehicle assembly plants at least two years ahead of the automaker’s global clean energy timeline.

Achieving 100% carbon-free power at the car plants begins with completing the 100 MW portion of the larger plan at Cold Creek.

Cold Creek turns a long-term commitment into real infrastructure

Cold Creek Solar Park puts “flesh” on that earlier agreement from 2022.

According to DTE Energy, the total of 650 MW in additional solar capacity will increase total statewide solar capacity by almost 70%.

Additionally, if all aspects of Ford’s agreement are fulfilled, it could eliminate up to 600,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Once all aspects of the larger agreement are completed, finishing the site will represent one aspect of “paper” becoming “hardware”.

The goal was bigger than simply adding renewable power

Ford specifically designed the entire deal so that it aligned with a specific manufacturing achievement rather than simply buying a block of green energy.

While generating green electricity, the facility supports this goal as it feeds clean energy into Michigan’s electrical grid.

Adding clean capacity of this scale strengthens the common local power delivery network that serves both factories and communities.

The benefits extend beyond Ford’s assembly plants

There are other positive outcomes associated with achieving this milestone at Cold Creek.

Beyond supporting Ford’s assembly targets, construction across the broader agreement will drive local economic growth. Specifically, the buildout is expected to spur job creation, boost municipal tax revenue, and lower regional carbon emissions.

Additionally, the new array will assist with longer-term clean energy goals that exist across Michigan and those set forth by DTE Energy.

Projects like this development directly advance those broader ambitions. A primary example is Michigan’s statutory goal to obtain 60% of its power from renewable resources by 2035.

Completing the job now depends on what comes next

Although construction activities at Cold Creek Solar Park are complete, there is much work left to accomplish regarding meeting Ford’s manufacturing targets.

Solar developments included as part of the procurement commitments continue to expand Michigan’s portfolio of carbon-free power.

Now attention shifts to determining if subsequent projects can develop sufficient volumes of power to achieve these production milestones.

Ultimately, the results of this effort will show how closely Michigan vehicle builds will match carbon-free electricity by December 31st, 2027.

Clean electricity is now flowing onto Michigan’s power grid from a newly completed utility array.
