Lime Down Solar Park may have the answer.

Britain’s proposed solar development for clean energy

Lime Down Solar Park has the potential to be one of the country’s biggest solar developments to supply homes with clean energy. This is crucial in an effort to boost a more sustainable economy.

This project has been proposed by Island Green Power and would include five separate solar panel sites dispersed at a large scale. Together they could create around 500 megawatts, carried to the grid by underground cable.

Due to its size, the project cannot just be approved by local council but has had to receive a Development Consent Order. The Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero will make a decision around Spring 2027, but there is debate as to whether or not it is in the land’s best interest.

Since the solar development is of such a large size, the concern is about what it will take from the land around, including various animals and birds that live there.

Concerns about the wildlife that may be impacted by this development

The impact on wildlife has been one of the biggest concerns raised against the Lime Down Solar Park development. While some projects like the Beinn an Tuirc wind farm have moved to avoid local wildlife, Lime Down has planned around it.

The need to consider the local environment, wildlife, biodiversity, and ecology is essential to successful implementation. Most notable are deer, birds, and other small mammals that move through the area.

The main concern is clear.

The land that these animals cross freely now would become fenced off as this solar development is built, which would impact movement, create a reduction in habitat, and cause wildlife displacement.

While the developer made it clear that most animals would be able to move through the fencing they will build, there is one species that would still be kept out, altering their movement drastically.

Lime Down Solar Park’s consideration of larger mammals

One of the main concerns about wildlife and the negative impact that Lime Down could have is the 2-metre deer stock fencing that is planned to be built around each site, to keep larger mammals like deer out.

However, the developers ensure there are measures in place to assist deer movement in their natural habitat. According to Lime Down Solar Park documents, wide buffers are going to be left around the edges of the solar site developments so that the deer and other mammals can still move freely in their habitat without being pushed onto roads or other dangerous areas.

In addition to this, no fencing is planned within 15 metres of public footpaths and, in an effort to mitigate negative environmental impact, the developers want to add over 15 km of hedgerow and almost 10 km of tree line. A biodiversity net gain of over 20% for area-based habitats is expected as well as around 10% for linear habitats such as hedgerows.

While some harm during Lime Down’s development is unfortunately unavoidable, the overall assessment of the solar sites concludes that their implementation will not have an overly significant negative effect on deer or other wildlife. Check out this other solar development that supports local biodiversity over the long term as well.

Britain is in need of more solar power. But it also needs to conserve its wildlife as best it can.
