If scientists could fully harness Hawaii’s energy potential, it could change everything in that region. This is a perfect idea considering how energy costs have skyrocketed and how fossil fuels have contributed to the damage to the environment; therefore, this discovery marks a significant moment for Hawaii and its surrounding areas to kickstart a clean energy generation source.

Geothermal energy is not a new concept. It has been in conversation for a while. For instance, we have the Yellowstone, which was once perceived to be a great energy resource; unfortunately, that was not possible. Hawaii has always been known to have geothermal energy because it is exposed to volcanic activity; however, researchers and experts were not aware of its full potential.

Under Hawaii’s volcanoes, a geothermal giant may revolutionise energy

Kīlauea Volcano, Mauna Loa, and Mauna Kea, just to name a few, are part of Hawaii’s volcanoes. You can then imagine the amount of heat that lies beneath the state and can be harnessed to produce geothermal energy. Experts claim that the amount of energy that can be generated by Hawaii can power the entire U.S. and is more powerful than the US electrical grid itself.

Geothermal energy is consistent, clean and natural. If we were to compare it to some of the clean energy resources, such as solar, we would realise that solar is fully dependent on the current weather conditions. Therefore, energy, power or electricity generation efficiency will depend on the rays of the sun. Geothermal is really available and is not conditioned by anything.

Hawaiian cultural and spiritual values that could hinder extracting geothermal energy

The Hawaiian volcanoes have a sentimental meaning to the community’s culture and spiritual values. According to Planetizen, Gavin Murphy—a long-time advocate for economic development and former CEO of Trust Tairāwhiti, a regional community trust in New Zealand—expressed that in harnessing geothermal energy, there should be a consideration of the Native Hawaiian cultures.

Geothermal energy, known as taonga in Māori and associated with the volcano goddess Tūtū Pele in Hawaiian folklore, is revered in both cultures. Therefore, it could be a hindrance because they could oppose the extraction of energy, claiming that the volcano will lose its power, meaning or significance to the community despite the fact that they can have efficient, cost-effective electricity from the volcanoes.

Geothermal power: other hurdles standing in the way

Besides the cultural hindrance that could either delay or be a barrier to Hawaii’s energy potential, there are other factors too, such as technical, political, environmental and logistics barriers. Large-scale energy generation requires a lot of stages for it to be implemented, especially if the vision is to power the entire United States, which means that processes need to be analysed before execution.

One of the hurdles also includes drilling through hard, hot rock. It requires the proper equipment and tools. With other geothermal regions, it is easier, and they are not as deep as Hawaii’s, which is why it has more challenges than other regions. Hawaii Island currently purchases 38 MW of power from the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, yet large-scale expansion faces challenges because the adequate tools to drill through deeper rock are still being developed.

According to Planetizen, Murphy, who worked on different geothermal projects, believes that Hawaii can produce energy and can revolutionise the entire energy system. The goal is to stop the underestimation of volcanoes and geothermal hubs that can essentially stop the production of energy using unclean resources and that could have an almost “infinite” impact on the communities. Hawaii has an opportunity to create more energy that can benefit more than just households. Murphy also claims that he has the support of state leaders. Therefore, Hawaii has a greater chance to develop a revolutionised energy hub.

Known for its beautiful natural landscapes, tropical islands and volcanic activity, Hawaii’s magma could be a potential geothermal energy resource and perhaps power the entire United States.
