The IRS’s policy on clean vehicle tax credits allows filers to claim a credit on their tax liability if they make the responsible decision to purchase an electric vehicle. However, the system whereby dealers report these sales experienced complications, and taxpayers missed out on the credits when the time came to claim on their tax returns. Luckily, there’s a solution, but it comes with important caveats.

Many taxpayers who bought EVs in 2024 missed out on their IRS credit

Americans who bought EVs in 2024 were under the impression that they would get a credit this spring in tax season 2025. This was one of the selling points that electric vehicle dealers used to attract customers. When buyers attempted to claim from the IRS, they found they were ineligible.

The problems originated at the dealerships, whose responsibility it was to report EV purchases to the IRS via a new online portal within three days of finalizing the sale. They either failed to do this within the time frame or completed the process incorrectly. Drivers were understandably frustrated after finding out that their expected tax credit never materialized.

Auto dealers were also affected

The dealers themselves were also affected and left out of pocket to the tune of thousands of dollars. NADA reported that some dealers had issued the credits to buyers upfront at the time of sale, which was a new option the IRS introduced in 2024. However, the same three-day deadline was missed in many cases, meaning the dealers missed out.

At first, there appeared to be no way to rectify the situation, which would involve dealerships having to submit correct purchase notifications to the IRS after the three-day deadline.

The IRS has a solution to the missed credit problem, and a warning

The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), the trade group representing auto dealers in the United States, says the IRS is now allowing dealers to submit sales reports for “qualifying clean vehicle credit transactions” conducted in 2024 — essentially, the three-day period is being waived.

However, the IRS notes that dealers “must have been successfully registered” in the online system prior to or on the date of sale in order for customers to receive the tax credit. That means dealers who neglected to enroll in the system at all may not be able to offer the fix to their customers — only those who failed to report the sale in time can correct the error.

The IRS also notes that processing such retroactive reports may take additional time, so buyers should be prepared to wait before any credit is confirmed.

What’s the process for EV buyers to claim EV tax credits?

The retroactive sales reporting system opened for testing on March 25, 2025, and was officially rolled out shortly after, according to a notice from NADA to its member dealers:

“It is unclear how long the functionality will remain open, but according to the IRS, dealers can begin using the portal now.”

NADA reported that it advocated “aggressively” for a solution from the IRS, and Congress was made aware of the situation by unhappy constituents looking for their tax credits.

Taxpayers who want to receive their EV credits will have to work hand-in-hand with the dealer that originally sold them the car. Owners aren’t able to access the online system — the ECO portal, the name for the IRS’s clean vehicle reporting system — themselves; only dealers can sign up and report sales to the IRS.

Taxpayers looking for their tax credits are reminded to verify all information with official sources before trusting information they find online.

The US Internal Revenue Service has been dealing with a crisis of sorts regarding tax credits for electric vehicles, and it’s not even the agency’s fault.
