There are still scientific conversations that Mars used to hold life and probably still does. A recent discovery made by NASA’s Curiosity Rover gives us more reason to believe that perhaps scientists are correct about this theory. In a recent finding, the Curiosity Rover happened to drive over and crush a rock and uncovered an inside of Mars. This cracked open the rock and revealed yellow sulfur crystals — the first time elemental sulfur has been found in a pure form on the Red Planet. This discovery shows that the red planet has a past that once contained life, potentially habitable too.

A strange yellow glow was discovered due to curiosity

Since the year 2012, NASA’s Curiosity Rover has been specifically set to make discoveries about Mars; however, this recent one caught the attention of scientists and researchers. Earth.com describes this finding as the bright, odourless sulfur crystals. This discovery is associated with hydrothermal activity on Earth. These crystals say a lot because it means Mars once experienced volcanic activities and hot springs, something Earth attributes.

An article by Earth.com states that there are salts formed when water evaporates, but only as mineral components or other substances, and sulfur is one of them. This time around it is different; this sulfur element is odourless. There is a research report that emphasises that billion years ago Mars had water and lakes and oceans; this sulfur discovery strengthens that report and confirms it too.

Ashwin Vasavada, the Curiosity’s project scientist from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California enthusiastically expressed,

“Finding a field of stones made of pure sulfur is like finding an oasis in the desert. It shouldn’t be there, so now we have to explain it. Discovering strange and unexpected things is what makes planetary exploration so exciting.”

Sulphur as a marker of Martian life

There are four things to take note of that give us confidence that Mars has held some form of life since then until now:

When it comes to detecting or comprehending the existence of life within Earth and beyond, sulfur is a vital component that carries that idea, according to Earth.com.

Some of Earth’s microorganisms rely on sulfur as their energy source.

Sulfates are birthed from water, and water is a main component when we talk about biology.

Therefore, the presence of sulfur on Mars gives us hope that there is life on the red planet.

An exploration of Mars’ watery history and its implications for life

This might come as if elemental sulfur has never been discovered on Mars. Scientists have seen many kinds of sulfur on Mars before; the region Curiosity found this rock is, in fact, known for being rich in sulfates. However, elemental sulfur — consisting only of pure sulfur atoms — had not been found in this pure form before. Therefore, besides water, there could be living organisms that perhaps have not yet been discovered and are existing on Mars.

Although the discovery of these sulfur crystals does not prove that there is a certainty of life, it does reinforce the phenomenon. According to Yahoo News, there are a lot of things we do not know about Mars, and these discoveries could be a small percentage compared to what is yet to be unveiled. The online publication continues to say there is more to unveil that we are not aware of yet.

Currently, we cannot say we have, on hand, evidence that proves there was life on Mars; there are still a lot of missing puzzles and each sample discovered is a step ahead of what could be unveiled next. The red planet seems to have a lot of secrets that will be exposed only if it allows us to. Just like how the universe has kept secrets for years, it is only now that we are learning more about it, with advanced technology that has also played a significant role. Breaking through Mars’ geological nature will take a lot of work, time, and research to get the answers we are looking for.

The idea of Mars hosting life has not ended.
