But it’s for a good reason. A fleet of futuristic Cybertrucks has been dispatched to one of the regions of California most affected by the week-long LA fires to provide support in the form of a power supply. Because of an electricity outage caused by the blaze, the area is without any internet connection, so the Cybertrucks will act as conduits for free WiFi.

Elon Musk is doing his part to fight the LA fires with Cybertrucks and free Wi-Fi

Elon Musk and Tesla are doing their part to assist as the LA fires rage on in parts of California. A community near the Eaton wildfire in Los Angeles County that’s without power can now access the internet thanks to a number of Cybertrucks stationed as mobile WiFi posts and powerbanks. Altadena, which is located just north of Pasadena, is among the worst-hit areas, and a lack of electricity is just one of the problems complicating emergency efforts.

Tesla donated several Cybertrucks to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Altadena station. A number of the futuristic trucks are now parked outside the station providing a power source and free WiFi, according to a post by Elon Musk on X.

There’s no time limit set on how long the sheriff’s station may make use of the vehicles as battery banks. They can remain parked as long as it takes to get the power restored, according to the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team.

More trucks are being primed for deployment to other areas of LA and Malibu

Tesla is preparing to send even more Cybertrucks out to Malibu and the greater Los Angeles area. Drivers in California waiting for their top-end Tesla pickup to be delivered will have to wait a while longer as the models earmarked for confirmed sales are now being used to combat a life-threatening situation. Musk offered his explanation on X:

“Apologies to those expecting Cybertruck deliveries in California over the next few days. We need to use those trucks as mobile base stations to provide power to Starlink Internet terminals in areas of LA without connectivity. A new truck will be delivered end of week.”

The Cybertrucks are proving invaluable

The Cybertrucks themselves do not actually act as portable internet hotspots. However, Musk said the donated models will be equipped with Starlinks and open WiFi.

A number of TV news crews are using Starlink terminals for broadcasting while parts of Los Angeles are without power.

According to Tesla’s website, Cybertrucks have sufficient backup capacity to power the average home for up to three days.

In other news about Cybertrucks, celebrities in the United Kingdom are hopping mad because they can’t go gallivanting around in one in their own country due to safety laws.

What’s the latest LA fires status?

As of Sunday night, January 12, 24 deaths between the Palisades and Eaton fires had been confirmed. The Medical Examiner’s latest report attributes 16 deaths to the Eaton blaze and eight to the Palisades fire. There are 16 people who have been reported missing to the sheriff’s department and this number is expected to rise in the coming days.

Red Flag warnings are still in place

The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag warnings for severe fire conditions until Wednesday. Sustained winds of 50 mph and gusts in the mountains reaching 70 mph are expected. Tuesday will be the most risky day, and thereafter, Santa Ana conditions are expected to start settling.

In Los Angeles County, around 150,000 people have been placed under evacuation orders. The nine shelters available currently house more than 700 fire “refugees.” Officials said that it’s unlikely that most of the evacuation orders in the Palisades region will be lifted before the Red Flag warning expires on Wednesday evening.

There’s a lot going on with Tesla at the moment. Elon Musk is apparently eating his words about alternative powertrains to EVs and has announced a major shift in Tesla’s focus that no one would have predicted.

Elon Musk had to apologize to a bunch of new Tesla owners for the late delivery of their vehicles.
