A very recent class action settlement was reached over yet another battery defect. This settlement at least provides some consolation to car owners whose lives were complicated before the settlement announcement. The automotive company at fault, of course, did not admit any wrongdoing, but the agreed-upon settlement speaks a thousand words.

The battery defect that resulted in a $150M Settlement

The parties at fault are General Motors (GM) and LG Electronics, and the vehicle of the main conversation is the electric vehicle, Chevrolet Bolt. After a noteworthy legal resolution, the parties at fault agreed to a $150 million settlement to make amends to the owners and lessees of the Chevrolet Bolt.

The following vehicle models were recalled due to safety concerns:

2017-2022 Bolt EV models were recalled in 2021

According to reports, the EV models had a battery defect that resulted in significant fire risks. The series of battery-related issues resulted in various recalls, lawsuits, and safety concerns. GM and LG Electronics denied wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve all the claims.

This is how much money affected car owners can expect

The lawsuit against GM and LG Electronics resulted in a major win for the affected car owners, claiming that the at-fault parties failed to inform consumers sufficiently and did not act promptly enough to resolve the problem.

Affected customers can expect a payout of up to $2,100. The deadline for filing a claim for this compensation was February 24, 2025. Those who managed to file their claims successfully before the deadline can expect the following financial compensation:

Vehicles that received a software update due to battery safety concerns – $1,400

Vehicles that had a battery replacement but not the software update before sale/lease termination – $700

Part of the settlement agreement was non-financial compensation, which meant GM had to provide advanced battery diagnostic software to improve vehicle safety and reduce fire risks.

Eligible people can expect payments on these dates

The following people were deemed eligible to receive compensation:

Owners or lessees of a 2017-2022 Chevy Bolt EV

The Chevy Bolt EV was built and shipped on or before August 19, 2021

Both current and former owners/lessees could be deemed eligible

The claim was filed before February 24, 2025

It is important to note that even those who sold or returned their leased Chevy Bolt still qualified for partial compensation if their vehicle qualified for a software remedy after the sale or lease termination. The settlement was officially closed after the final approval hearing took place on March 25, 2025. Even though official payout dates were not communicated, successful claimants could expect their compensation sooner than they think.

In this modern era, technology advances faster than the speed of light, and electric vehicle technology even more so. If this class action settlement teaches us one thing, it is that safety, transparency, and consumer protection are of utmost importance in the ever-growing electric vehicle market. Remember, you as a consumer have your rights and the right to ensure them! We hope this teaches not only GM and LG Electronics a valuable lesson, but also other automotive manufacturers as well.
