Before your inner big, bad wolf comes out to play, we have three legal ways to reduce your taxes today and we know you would never have guessed the last one. So, before you huff, and puff, and blow the IRS buildings down out of frustration, we will help you to take more control of your taxes without anyone having to cry wolf, so perk up those ears and pay attention!

Know why you must pay taxes

Some people have begrudgingly argued that taxes are illegal. This claim is false. Per the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Congress uses the power granted by the Constitution and Sixteenth Amendment, and makes laws requiring all individuals to pay tax.

Congress delegates to the IRS the responsibility of conducting the tax laws known as the Internal Revenue Code (the Code), which can be found in Title 26 of the United States Code. Congress approves these tax laws, and the IRS enforces them.

Anyone who disobeys the laws, will face civil and criminal punishments, including prosecution and prison sentence. So, if you don’t want to be prosecuted and go to jail but still insist on paying lower taxes, here are three legal ways to reduce your taxes.

Three legal ways to reduce your taxes

Contribute to the individual retirement account (IRA)

If you contribute to a traditional individual retirement account, it becomes tax-deductible for the year you contributed. Note: Different IRS rules on IRA contributions apply to differing situations

If you and your spouse are covered by a retirement plan at work, your adjusted gross income may limit the contribution.

If you and your spouse are not covered, the full contribution amount is usually deductible.

Bunch expenses

Business-owners can deduct various business-related costs and should bunch their expenses as much as possible into the current year.

Make major business-related purchases at the year-end instead of the beginning.

Pay employee bonuses at year-end, instead of the beginning of the year.

Prepaid expenses. For example, if you regularly pay $5,000 monthly to buy supplies, consider buying $15,000 worth at year-end to make it through the next three months. Bulk purchases at year-end result in deductions in the current tax year for that business expense.

Taxes are “pay-as-you-go”

Pay the majority of tax throughout the year, as income is received, rather than paying at year-end.

Withhold from your pay, your pension or certain government payments, such as Social Security to pay tax.

Make quarterly estimated tax payments during the year to avoid surprise tax bills when filing returns.

Ordinarily, Estimated Tax penalties can be avoided by paying at least 90% of tax throughout the year.

Please note:

Estimated tax payments are generally due:

April 15 for income earned January 1 to March 31

June 15 for income earned April 1 to May 31

September 15 for income earned June 1 to August 31

January 15 of the following year for income earned September 1 to December 31

Long story short: File your tax returns correctly

No matter which tip you use to reduce your taxes, you must always file your returns correctly. Check your withholding as often as possible and make necessary adjustments as your situation changes. This will help you to avoid a tax bill.

According to the IRS official website, changes in your life, such as marriage, divorce, working a second job, running a side business, or receiving any other income without withholding can affect the amount of tax you owe. If you are an employee, you have the option to withhold more tax.

You see big, bad wolves? Tax season might not always be quite the fairytale, but it also doesn’t have to be a horror show.
