What they have discovered recently, however, poses a more serious threat to planetary systems such as ours, and in turn, planets like Earth. A multi-planet system named HR 8799 has been the focus of NASA’s planetary studies for some time. The telescope has now given the researchers a new way to view the iconic planet system. The new view out of the telescope enabled them to block out the light created by the system’s star and reveal what the large planets are made of in more detail than before.

What are the researchers looking for in HR 8799? How long have they been looking?

The study of planetary systems that have stars has been going on since the ancient Assyrian-Babylonians, around 1000 BCE. The human race has forever looked to the stars in an attempt to answer the questions of existence and the creation story. Not to mention the idea that there must be life out there besides us. NASA led the world in space exploration for the majority of the space race. Recently, SpaceX has made an entrance into the sector.

However, our limited technology means we simply cannot travel far distances in space, like really far. Some point out that the human race’s self-destructive nature has limited the advancement of science and getting the answers to the deep questions that could define us. The launch of the James Webb Telescope in 2021 changed the way we can study the universe.

James Webb was the second administrator of NASA and served from 1961 to 1968. He led NASA through an incredible part of space exploration that saw the Apollo missions go where no man had gone before. The new telescope was a fitting tribute to Webb. What they discovered and the sheer pace of discovery are truly amazing. We are now able to study planetary systems in such great detail that researchers are making discoveries at an amazing rate.

What exactly have NASA and the Webb telescope found in HR 8799?

The team has been able to adjust the telescope to block out the light from the HR 8799 star, which has given them a new view into the four large planets around the star and what they’re made of. By adjusting the telescope, the team found that they could now see carbon dioxide coming from the planets that formed with a solid centre or crust.

So they are built in a similar way to Jupiter or Saturn. A large, solid mass that slowly formed over time, surrounded by gases. The team made use of the telescope’s coronagraphs to take an image of the planets and reveal their colors. Which have a direct link to what gases are found in the planet’s respective formations. Giving the scientists new and interesting findings to study.

What else will the James Webb telescope find out there?

William Balmer, John Hopkins University astrophysicist made the following statement, “These giant planets have pretty big implications, If you have these huge planets acting like bowling balls running through your solar system, they can either disrupt, protect, or do a little bit of both to planets like ours, so understanding more about their formation is a crucial step to understanding the formation, survival, and habitability of Earth-like planets in the future.

Since its launch in 2021, the James Webb Telescope has made some amazing discoveries in a very short time frame indeed. The speed of innovation on Earth is staggering, but is it fast enough? The future of the Guaranteed Time Observations program is so bright, yet we can’t stop looking into the great beyond.

NASA’s James Webb Telescope has given us some of the most spectacular images of galaxies far, far away.
