As Japan unveils the car of the future, we can see they have touched base with earlier generations to inspire the sixth generation of this specific car. Boasting a whole new look and an all-hybrid powertrain, but retaining some of the old classics from within, let us see what exactly this Japanese automotive giant’s car of the future has in store for us for 2026.

The 6th generation is the car of the future

Japanese automotive giant, Toyota, has enjoyed vast success in 2024 in terms of sales figures, thanks to the fifth generation of the Toyota RAV4. Per GCBC statistics, Toyota sold 475,193 RAV4s in the US, beating the long-reigning Ford F-150 as America’s best-selling vehicle in 2024.

According to TorqueNews, the sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 is most certainly arriving for 2026, but Japan might be the first to get it as we have seen with other Japanese models, such as the Nissan R35 GT-R back in 2007. The new RAV4 will have a significant visual update, but it will maintain some of the essence of previous generations.

This is what can be expected from the sixth-generation RAV4

The new RAV4 model is expected to retain the existing platform. While its look will get a sleek new polish, the car itself won’t be an “all-new” model in the traditional sense. The front of the car showcases wraparound daylight running lights with hammerhead inner segments and a honeycomb grille, resulting in a squarer car with contrasting elements.

From the side-view, the RAV4 will showcase its characteristic silhouette, along with the option of a two-tone roof and bold contrasting lower protective covering. From the back-view, a full-width LED taillight cluster will be paired with squared-off lower protective covering, featuring silver inlays for a futuristic look.

The upcoming RAV4 will be all-hybrid and could feature a powertrain similar to the latest Camry, with slight improvements in both power and efficiency over the current version. This means the RAV4 will continue to be powered by the 2.5-liter Dynamic Force engine. The inline-four engine sports an Atkinson cycle and works with one or two electric motors, depending on the application. Per Toyota, the next generation of this powertrain will feature more powerful electric motors.

The RAV4 could face production difficulties

Toyota, like many other automotive companies, is not capable of shifting manufacturing on a moment’s notice. Reuters’ sources stated that Toyota is deciding whether to produce the sixth-generation RAV4 at its Kentucky factory, in addition to manufacturing in Canada and Japan, to avoid President Donald Trump’s excessive tariffs of 25% on foreign vehicle imports.

Many major automotive companies have stopped production plans to discuss manufacturing in the US and held off on imports as they attempt to avoid the stiff taxes, which could significantly increase costs for producers and increase vehicle prices for US customers.

“We continually study ways to improve our manufacturing efficiencies to best serve our customers and provide stable employment for our team members.” – Toyota official statement.

According to a Reuters report, the final production plans have not been established, and if Toyota decides to go ahead with its plans for the Kentucky plant, it would likely start manufacturing the RAV4 in 2027.
