People change their minds, they give advice they don’t follow, and they do things they know are bad for them and not nearly enough of what’s good for them. Emotions can be contradictory, and so can actions. This is proven by automotive companies creating eco-friendly non-electric engines. Can something be eco-friendly if it is non-electric? The figures do not lie, but people do, especially to ease their peace of mind.

China’s non-electric engine

China has become synonymous with electric vehicles (EVs). The Chinese automaker, Great Wall Motors (GWM) is known for sport-utility vehicles and pick-up trucks, as well as trucks. Recently, GWM announced that it has not completely given up on internal combustion power yet. Surprised? So are we. The company stated that it has been developing a twin-turbo 4.0-liter gas V-8 for high-end vehicles and is also working on a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel.

According to a WhichCar report, the engine will include a dual fuel injection system and dual oil pumps, with a rev limiter of 8,000 rpm. However, the company has not completely forgotten about the environment, as the engine will be part of a plug-in hybrid powertrain intended for use in various vehicles. One electric motor will be installed between the engine and transmission, allowing for electric-only operation.

Why it’s not over for combustion engines just yet

GWM wants to beat Ferrari and has been developing this engine for the past five years. According to the interview posted on Weibo, GWM’s Chief Technology Officer, Wu Huixiao, announced that the high-end vehicle “will be better than a Ferrari.” The company hopes that by learning from its rivals, it will be able to beat the “Prancing Horse.”

The company’s new engine targets luxury vehicles, SUVs, and trucks where extra power for towing is required. Their carbon footprint will be kept in place, as the engine’s hybrid component will ensure clean in-city driving while promising that extra kick required for highway driving. GWM’s engine will undergo multiple fine-tunings to ensure the flexibility to perform as a workhorse and a high-performance star. A boxy, yet luxurious off-roader expected to feature the new engine is the Tank 300 Hooke Trail Edition.

The serious and unexpected drawback

GWM has thought about launching its latest engine in the US, but the current political and tariff war between the US and China has given the company second thoughts. The engine’s development has also not been without its challenges. According to Wu, the engine faces issues with carbon fiber tub manufacturing and cost reductions, which is why the engine has not officially been launched yet.

“GWM must build a car that will spike adrenaline, cause an explosion of hormones, and dopamine.” – Wu.

If the above is the only way to compete with domestic and international competition, we’re not sure if hybrid vehicles are the way to go. Especially in the Chinese market, where local brands offer high-tech EVs with long ranges and much lower prices, not to mention the fact that they have the promise of zero emissions, unlike hybrid vehicles. Switch2Zero has indicated that Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs) may result in higher emissions over longer distances, particularly if the engine is inefficient after the battery has been depleted. Conventional Hybrids’ (HEVs) benefits decline on long highway drives.

According to T&E, if we switch from an ICE to an EV, it will eliminate all toxic tailpipe emissions, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbons (HC)– not just particles. It is a reality that automotive companies are under pressure due to lowering sales figures and the low demand for EVs, but is trying to meet sales demands worth sacrificing the progress that has been made in evolving into a carbon-free society?

The world is full of contradictions.
