The interaction between two particles, the appearance of protons or neutrons, can result in energy blasts, which are almost always associated with physics. The universe is filled with particles interacting, and many of the things we see in the galaxy happen because of the interactivity of many chemical molecules. However, what we know about quantum mechanics and particle interaction in the universe can change with a future discovery by scientists from the CMS Collaboration.

Physics as we know it is about to change

Scientists have been experimenting with particle interactions for decades to better understand their energetic nature. To this day, the most energetic particle ever recorded is the Ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) by the University of Utah Fly’s Eye in 1991. Its power is approximately 50 joules, equivalent to that of a fast-pitched baseball. There are other types of elementary particles filled with energy, such as the Higgs Boson, neutrinos, or photons.

These particles can reach unimaginable speeds when they are released by black holes, in a neutron-star collision, or shock waves from supernovas. They originate from highly energetic environments, many of which are not common to Earth, but travel to us from the farthest points in our galaxy and other corners of the universe. What they find could be the “new physics”.

Scientists are looking to explain old theories

For the first time in history, researchers have been looking to detect soft unclustered energy patterns—signals that do not form into clear particle groups. The study was made by the CMS Collaboration, using the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, and aims to break down these energy patterns in particle interactions.

Physicists are searching for unknown particles that might hint at the existence of the Hidden Valley, a theoretical realm that may hold the explanation for mysterious phenomena. The current theory, called the Standard Model, can explain the behavior of common particles such as quarks, electrons, and neutrinos. However, the model does not address the existence of dark matter and dark energy, which scientists believe make up around 95% of the universe, according to physics.

Both concepts approach the same theory that invisible forces hold and expand the universe. An astrophysicist named Fritz Zwicky was the first to use the term “dark matter” to explain the gravitational interactions between galaxies back in 1933. 65 years later, another astrophysicist, Michael Turner from the University of Chicago, referred to the “dark energy” as the mysterious force causing the expansion of the universe.

Behind all these questions, there are even bigger ones, such as what percentage of the universe we are able to see. The physics theory has been present for over 100 years, and Edwin Hubble in 1929 was the first scientist to argue that the universe is expanding by observing the distance to other galaxies.

Some questions might not have an answer

Hubble discovered a linear relationship between the distance of the farther galaxies and the light from the object, which is redder, the more distant it is, and the faster it is moving away. From that moment on, he discovered that the universe is expanding, and many years later, Michael Turner came up with the concept of dark energy.

The discovery of the ‘New Physics’ can break the barriers between what is fact and what is a theory, allowing us to better understand not only what is out there but also how it relates to life on Earth.
