However, to this day, we have not been able to find life on any planet, and there are two hypotheses for this: either everyone is hiding, or the great filter has already passed over other civilizations, planets, and erased any trace of life. On the other hand, sometimes these signs are just stars twinkling or pulsing, working like a cosmic lighthouse until now, where scientists found a new bright light signaling to Earth in a way only the most powerful telescope we have can see.

Cosmic jets are frequent in the universe

Not only stars, but also black holes, are capable of shooting these signals. When matter falls into the void, it is sometimes expelled by the cosmic destroyer almost at the speed of light, driven by powerful magnetic forces. These jets are common, but not as frequent as those coming from stars.

Young stars are often ejecting powerful jets of gas and dust. The phenomenon is closely related to its formation process, where the material from the surrounding disk spirals towards the protostar, and the magnetic field has a key role in this process, channeling and ejecting this material perpendicular to the star’s rotation axis.

Cosmic jets can be studied using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, which searches the furthest points of the universe and has helped uncover something that might change the way stars are currently being studied.

NASA found something signaling Earth

A mysterious space object, known as ASKAP J1832, has captured the attention of astronomers from around the world. Located about 15,000 light-years from Earth, this strange signal is giving new clues about a little-understood class of cosmic phenomena.

ASKAP J1832 belongs to a category known as “long-period radio transients,” a group that was only recently identified in recent years. These objects are known for sending out consistent bursts of radio waves — but unlike pulsars, which pulse every few seconds or less, ASKAP J1832 takes its time. It emits a radio signal every 44 minutes, with each flare lasting several minutes, making it thousands of times slower than the pulses of traditional spinning neutron stars.

The discovery was made by two telescopes

What makes this discovery even more intriguing is the combination of tools used to study it: astronomers on Earth relied on both NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and Australia’s Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. Together, these powerful instruments helped capture data that might eventually lead scientists to a better understanding of what powers these slow, steady signals. The findings were recently published in Nature.

Lead researcher Dr. Ziteng (Andy) Wang from the Curtin University node of ICRAR explained that detecting X-rays from ASKAP J1832-0911 was an incredibly lucky break. Since ASKAP scans a wide area of the sky while NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory focuses on much smaller regions, it was a rare coincidence that both telescopes happened to observe the same patch of sky at the same time, allowing astronomers to catch this unusual object in action.

Scientists don’t know how to explain the phenomenon

Scientists still do not know exactly what is behind these signals, or why they turn on and off in strange, long, and consistent intervals towards Earth. According to Dr. Wang, ASKAP J1832-0911 does not resemble anything scientists have come across before. One theory suggests it might be a magnetar. Another possibility is that it is part of a binary system, where one of the stars is a white dwarf with an unusually strong magnetic field — which would make it the white dwarf with the strongest magnetic field known in the Milky Way. Either way, the object’s strange behavior is pushing astronomers to rethink what is possible in deep space.

Cosmic objects are always sending signals to Earth.
