It changed the future for many generations of females, and soon this state will be assisting its citizens once again. The dates for the tax refund have been officially set for the first group of eligible individuals. Start lining up in the queue and see whether you qualify today.

This state will be distributing tax refunds

Georgia has joined various other states in distributing tax refund stimulus checks to its citizens, thanks to the approval of House Bill 112. These checks form part of an extended economic relief program, initiated by Governor Brian Kemp. The program will support thousands of Georgia families facing financial hardship as a result of the increased cost of living.

Georgia’s General Assembly approved the tax relief package as a result of the historic $16 billion budget surplus. These refund checks are an added bonus to the significantly lower 2025 income tax rate, which decreased to 5.19%. More good news may be in line as the state has set a goal to reach a tax income rate of 4.99% by 2028. But, before you start celebrating, first check to see whether you are eligible for this year’s tax refunds.

These citizens will be deemed eligible for a refund

“Because we have wisely managed the state’s resources, we can again return money to Georgia workers who know how to use it better than the government.” – Governor Kemp

Before you figure out how you will be using the additional money, you must see whether or not you are eligible. The following criteria must be met:

You must be a full-time resident of the state of Georgia

You filed your 2023 and 2024 state tax returns

You filed your tax returns by May 1

You had a tax liability in 2023

You are not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return

If you meet all the above criteria, you are part of the eligible group of people that will be financially assisted thanks to the efforts of the state and Governor Kemp. What makes the 2025 Georgia rebates even better is that they are not taxable. Some people have already started receiving their checks, but others may have to wait a little longer, especially for those who opted for paper checks.

Eligible citizens can expect their payments on these dates

The state’s tax refunds may take longer for some, depending on when you filed your income tax return. Just like the rest of the US, the deadline was on April 15. However, the aftermath of Hurricane Helene resulted in a state and federal deadline extension to May 1 for the citizens of Georgia. Georgia’s Department of Revenue declared that eligible taxpayers can expect their tax refunds six to eight weeks after filing, meaning the exact payment date will vary based on when you submitted your return.

Some lucky ducks may have already received a direct deposit on Monday, June 16, labeled “GASTTAXRFD.” According to state officials, the label stands for Georgia State Tax Refund. Take note that not everyone will be receiving the same amounts, as the reimbursements vary:

Single filers and married separate filers will receive $250

Head of household filers will receive $375

Married joint filers will receive $500

You can visit the Georgia Department of Revenue website to check your eligibility and to track your refund status. You will require your SSN or ITIN (Tax ID) and your 2023 Georgia Individual Income Tax return’s Federal Adjusted Gross Income (Line 16 on Form 500 or Line 4 on 500EZ). Other states also have economic relief programs to assist with the increased cost of living, such as New York’s inflation checks.

Disclaimer: Our coverage of stimulus checks, tax reliefs, tax rebates, tax credits, and other payments is based on the official sources listed in the article.
