We are also another day closer to winter’s colder, harsher weather. With all that being said, it’s no wonder people are scrambling around for additional money. Fortunately, some state pensioners can now get £4,300, but only a certain group will be eligible to claim in November. Discover what the eligibility criteria are today, and perhaps you could be benefiting from additional payments soon.

State pensioners can now get £4,300

Poverty in the UK has become increasingly problematic. Data from 2024 by the Social Metrics Commission has indicated that nearly 16 million Britons live in poverty. According to UNISON, from this number, it was estimated that approximately 2 million of the UK’s state pensioners lived in poverty. UNISON also concluded that five groups are more vulnerable to facing poverty.

Five vulnerable groups

Seniors who are still paying housing costs in retirement

A high number of single pensioners

Ethnic minorities’ seniors

Pensioners with disabilities

Single women, due to factors such as lower pension payments

Now, the state pension can only contribute a certain amount, and will not necessarily help to meet all the financial needs of pensioners. This is why the UK Government is advocating another benefit programme, which is currently underclaimed across various UK regions. Thanks to this benefit programme, state pensioners can now get £4,300, but only a certain group will be eligible to claim in November.

Only this group is eligible to claim in November

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) undertook a nationwide analysis to determine the number of eligible state pensioners missing out on a vital benefit programme, and the numbers were shocking. The study revealed that approximately 990,000 eligible people were missing out in the 2023/2024 fiscal year, and the average annual claim for these people was £2,600.

Now, the DWP has partnered up with Age UK and Independent UK to initiate a trial, in which 2,000 letters will be sent to eligible state pensioners across England to encourage them to start claiming Pension Credit. The analysis identified this particular group, who are not currently claiming Pension Credit, as the most likely to be eligible to claim this benefit in November.

“Pension Credit is a simple way to give those who need it the most some extra support with bills or a free TV licence.” – Torsten Bell, Minister for Pensions

The average payment amounts to truly expect

According to the official DWP information on Pension Credit, eligible pensioners can expect the following average payment amounts:

An average weekly payment of £82.71, or £4,300 annually

An average weekly payment of £78.23 for individual pensioners, or £4,067.96 annually

An average weekly payment of £114.99 for couples, or £5.979.48 annually

For those who are not entirely convinced to claim Pension Credit, the benefit can still be claimed even if you are the owner of a home, have pension savings, or receive a personal or workplace pension. What’s more, Pension Credit allows you to benefit from the following in addition:

Cold weather payments

Warm home discount

Christmas bonus

Free TV licence (for pensioners aged 75 or older)

Council tax reduction

Housing benefit

Support for mortgage interest

Assistance with NHS dental treatments, glasses, and transport expenses

Royal Mail redirect service discount

Another benefit that Pension Credit beneficiaries can look forward to is the winter £150 energy bill discount. So, if you know you are eligible for Pension Credit benefits, but are among the nearly 990,000 people missing out, why not start the application process today?
