The Met Office has already predicted a significant frosty start to the winter for some regions in the UK, with experts believing that this winter will be colder than initially thought. As you prepare for the cold, find out if you will qualify for the £25 weekly payments.

With frost comes additional costs

Winters in the UK are no strangers to frost. The UK has experienced some historic winters, some of which are still remembered by some Britons today. These historic winters include, but are not limited to:

Winter 2009/2010, which was the coldest recorded winter of the 21st century (so far)

Winter in 2008/2009, with the heaviest snowfall since 1991 on 2 February

Winter in 1974, when the UK experienced daily snowfall for 55 consecutive days

The ‘Big Freeze’ in 1962/1963, the coldest on record, featured snowdrifts, blizzards, and temperatures below – 20 degrees Celsius

The ‘Great Frost’ in 1683/1684, when the River Thames remained frozen all the way to London Bridge for two months, and Somerset’s ground froze 4 feet deep

Now, more than 300 years ago, surviving the harsh frost was no easy feat, with many people and animals succumbing to the cold. In modern times, we are fortunate enough to have easy access to warm meals, efficient heating in our homes and warmer clothing. However, in today’s day and age, significant frost brings additional costs, and as food and energy costs continue to increase, some people cannot afford to survive.

Fortunately, the DWP has opened a window of opportunity for some qualifying families, as £25 weekly payments start this November.

DWP opens window for qualifying families

The DWP has opened the window of opportunity for the most-anticipated weekly winter payment. That’s right, it is officially time for the DWP’s Cold Weather Payment, which will distribute weekly payments worth £25 to eligible Britons who live in areas that record, or are predicted to experience, temperatures of 0 degrees Celsius or lower for seven consecutive days. However, the low temperatures are not the only eligibility requirement.

To fully qualify for the Cold Weather Payment, you must also be a recipient of one of the following benefits:

Jobseeker’s Allowance (income-based)

Employment and Support Allowance (income-related)

Pension Credit

Income Support

Support for Mortgage Interest

Universal Credit

£25 weekly payments start this November

According to the official information from the DWP on Cold Weather Payments, the £25 payments are usually paid out within two weeks after each recorded cold spell. The money will be reflected in the same account that is used for your usual benefit payments. The Cold Weather Payment officially started on 1 November 2025 and will continue running until 31 March 2026, leaving a wide window of opportunity to benefit.

These Cold Weather Payments are very convenient and efficient, as they are automatically paid out to qualifying Britons, which means that you will not be required to do anything else once your region has experienced a cold spell. The UK Government advises anyone who qualifies but did not receive their payments to contact either:

The Pensions Service, or

Jobcentre Plus

No matter how bad the frost hits you and your household this winter, there will always be one way or another to stay warm and as financially secure as possible. If you do not qualify for the Cold Weather Payment, do not fret, as there are several other winter support programmes to provide financial assistance this season. An example includes the £150 payouts to qualifying families between November and December.
