This benefits programme will be switched off soon, but do not fret! The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has introduced a new alternative for claimants, ensuring that all eligible claimants will continue to receive benefits. Discover why the Jobseeker’s Allowance will come to an end, and which benefits programme will end up being thousands of Britons’ saviour.

Jobseeker’s Allowance to be switched off

Welfare programmes are vital in addressing the UK’s ongoing high cost of living and poverty issues. Poverty, especially for children, has been increasing much faster compared to other wealthy countries. The House of Commons Library has yet to release the latest 2025 poverty figures, but preliminary 2024 predictions revealed that the UK’s poverty rates continued to increase.

This is why welfare programmes are vital. They provide a ‘social safety net’ for vulnerable groups and alleviate poverty and the risk of poverty by ensuring a minimum standard of living that allows people to meet their basic needs. However, one of the vital governmental welfare programmes, namely Jobseeker’s Allowance, is coming to an end. Fortunately, the DWP introduced a new alternative for claimants, so keep an eye out for a particular letter.

DWP introduces a new alternative for claimants

Bad news for beneficiaries, as they must say goodbye to Jobseeker’s Allowance, because this programme will end in a few months. It forms part of what is being referred to as “legacy benefits,” which have been deemed outdated and are now part of the UK Government’s “managed migration” process. In a nutshell, the process entails transitioning all legacy beneficiaries to the alternative programme.

This alternative programme is known as Universal Credit, and all legacy beneficiaries can expect to receive a letter outlining the managed migration process and encouraging them to make the transition as soon as possible. The DWP has mentioned in a statement of encouragement:

“To continue getting financial support, you must claim Universal Credit by the deadline date in your letter. Your benefits will end even if you decide not to claim Universal Credit.”

This is when the legacy comes to an end

According to the UK Government’s information on the Jobseeker’s Allowance programme, those who have applied to migrate to the alternative programme will automatically continue to benefit from Jobseeker’s Allowance for 2 weeks starting from their new claim date. Furthermore, these particular beneficiaries will not be expected to repay these additional benefit payments, and the extra payments will not affect their new benefits.

The legacy benefits will officially have ended on 1 April 2026, which is why a UK Government document stated:

“The DWP plans to move all legacy benefit claimants to UC by March 2026, completing the UC rollout and closing all legacy benefits by this date.”

Anyone who has not yet received a migration notice letter is still advised to apply at least three months before the deadline to ensure they continue to benefit. If any applications are made after the deadline, the programme’s usual eligibility criteria will apply.

In conclusion, if you are still between a rock and a hard place when it comes to deciding whether you should make the transition or not, ensure that you do not wait too long, or you’ll risk losing out on another additional benefit called the transitional protection, which is top up payments for those who received higher benefits compared to their Universal Credit rate. Another benefits programme is set to end in 2026, and its beneficiaries must ensure that they follow all the guidelines to continue receiving benefits in the new year.

Disclaimer: Our coverage of one-off payments, support payments, tax reliefs, tax refunds, tax credits and other payments is based on the official sources listed in the article.
