The location is undisclosed, but that is a separate problem.

They are in the dark because daylight itself would ruin the measurement.

The bottle went into the ground under a different president, in a different century.

What it holds has been waiting for a specific signal.

Why the dark and the downward mouth both matter

Mullein seeds are physiologically dormant. They do not germinate on moisture and warmth alone.

They need light, and in its absence they will sit indefinitely without spending anything.

Open a bottle of them in daylight and the clock starts on the walk back to the lab rather than in a controlled tray.

The burial was designed with the same care. The bottles went in uncorked and mouth slanting downward, so water could never collect inside while air could still move.

The sand is drainage, not soil. It holds the seeds apart, lets everything wet run out, and gives nothing back that a seed could feed on.

Which is the part that makes this an experiment rather than a burial. Nothing in there was sealed, and nothing in there was allowed to stay wet.

What came up out of the tray

Twenty seedlings, from fifty seeds. Forty percent, after fourteen decades in the ground.

Eight of them broke the surface within the first eleven days, which is not the behavior of exhausted material.

All twenty were mullein. Nineteen were moth mullein, confirmed by both appearance and a genetic marker.

The twentieth looked wrong and tested wrong. It was a cross between moth mullein and common mullein.

That single plant is what the paper is named for, and it is the smaller half of the finding.

The larger half is that the botanist’s own notes list only common mullein for that slot, and nineteen plants disagree with him.

What was buried and how it has been read

Twenty glass pint bottles of buried seeds went into a Michigan campus in 1879, each holding sand and fifty seeds from twenty three weed species.

The digs began every five years, stretched to every ten in 1920, and to every twenty in 1980.

This was the sixteenth bottle, lifted in April of 2021 after the scheduled 2020 dig slipped by a year.

That is why the study is titled around 141 years while the seeds actually spent 142 in the ground, and both numbers are correct about different things.

The germination assay ran 244 days, and the results appeared in a botany journal in the fall of 2023.

Nothing about that schedule was casual. Each dig has to be handed from one custodian to the next, and the interval was stretched twice precisely to make the bottles last.

It was the first time in the experiment’s history that genomic sequencing was used, which is why a suspicion from the year 2000 could finally be settled.

What the mix up actually tells you

Somebody in 1879 put the wrong seed in a bottle, and hybridized seed at that.

Common and moth mullein grow together and cross readily, so a collector gathering from a mixed stand would not have noticed.

That is a caution about every seed lot ever recorded by hand, and it applies to modern practice too. What comes up from a seeded mix is not always what the label promised.

The surface a seed lands on decides the rest, which is why bare ground and leaf cover produce different results from the same sowing.

The other thing the mix up reveals is narrower and less comfortable, and it has nothing to do with the botanist.

Every other species in that bottle is gone, and the experiment has quietly become a study of one genus.

What is left in the ground

Four bottles. The next comes up in 2040, and the last is scheduled for 2100.

By then this will have run for 221 years, which makes it the longest continuously monitored biological experiment anyone has managed to keep going.

Whether it still measures seed longevity is a fair question, since mullein is the only thing left to count. A survival curve with one survivor is a portrait rather than a curve.

The published account is careful about that, and about the hybrid being an accident rather than a discovery.

The team that dug it up says the plan is unchanged, and the handover to the next generation of researchers is part of the design.

Somebody now in school will open the last one, in the dark, and find out whether anything at all is still alive.

A shallow pit, a trowel, and a glass pint bottle packed with sand coming up out of it.
