Twenty one tunnels, roughly 9,800 feet of them, roofed with corrugated steel arches.

There is a hospital, a shop, a theater, a church and a barber, and about 200 people living in it.

There is also a nuclear reactor.

The host country was told the opposite.

Why anyone would build a town inside a glacier

Snow is a poor foundation and an excellent roof. Cut a trench into compacted snow, arch steel over it and let drift bury the arch, and the insulation is free and permanent.

Inside, temperatures hold steady while the surface swings by 80 degrees across a year.

The method has one fatal property. Ice is not a solid in the way rock is, it flows under its own weight, and a trench cut into it begins closing the moment it is finished.

Crews here spent a large share of their time shaving the walls and floors back as the tunnels squeezed inward around them.

A reactor was installed to supply power without hauling fuel across 127 miles of ice, and it ran for about three years before being pulled out.

The ice was the building material and also the countdown.

What the host country was told

Greenland was Danish territory, and Denmark held a declared policy against nuclear weapons on its soil.

The base was therefore presented as a research installation, testing construction techniques in Arctic conditions, exploring the practical problems of a semi mobile reactor, and supporting scientific experiments.

Every one of those descriptions was true. None of them was the reason.

Journalists were flown in. A boys’ magazine ran a piece on it. Photographs of the tunnels circulated widely and nobody was lying in them.

A cover story built entirely from true statements is the hardest kind to catch, and this one held for more than three decades.

Everything stated was accurate. The purpose was not stated.

The plan the tunnels were a rehearsal for

The intention was a network of 2,500 miles of tunnel under 52,000 square miles of ice, an area about three times the size of Denmark.

Inside it would sit up to 600 ballistic missiles on rails, shuffled between firing positions so that no adversary could target them.

The base above was the feasibility test for that. It answered whether people could live and work in cut and cover tunnels at all.

The answer came back yes, and then it came back no, because surveys showed the ice moving far faster than the planners had assumed.

At that rate the tunnels and launch positions would have been crushed in roughly two years, and no missile network survives a two year lifespan.

The test succeeded and killed the project that commissioned it.

When the files came out

The camp was evacuated in the middle of the 1960s and abandoned outright soon after, and the story stayed buried with it.

What opened it was a different scandal. An aircraft carrying nuclear weapons crashed near the same base in 1968, and the Danish inquiry into that crash pulled the file drawer open.

In January 1995 a Danish foreign policy institute published findings from that inquiry, and documents followed in 1997.

Denmark learned then that the installation on its own territory had been the pilot for a missile field its own policy forbade.

Polar ground is searched and resurveyed by hand for decades afterward, the way crews walked 3 square miles of sea ice in a line.

The missile count, the tunnel plan and the cover story wording are set out in a reference entry.

The crash opened the drawer. The tunnels were inside it.

What the fake science actually produced

Here is the part that gets left out, and it is the only part still doing any work.

The scientific program used as cover drilled the first ice core taken right through an ice sheet to the bedrock beneath it, finishing in 1966.

That core became a founding record of past climate, and the frozen sediment recovered from the very bottom sat in storage for decades before anyone examined it properly.

When they did, it showed plant material, proving the site had been ice free within roughly the last 400,000 years.

Arctic infrastructure is always temporary in some way, like the winter road northeast of Yellowknife that is rebuilt from nothing every year.

The tunnel count, the reactor dates and the material left behind are listed in a second entry.

The weapons plan lasted a few years, and the alibi is still being cited in climate papers.

A flat white horizon in northwest Greenland, no rock in any direction, wind moving loose snow across the surface.
