Not only does life pass them by, but so do all the notice boards indicating the speed limits in the various regions. Now, a foundation in the UK has been floating around the idea of a change to the speed limit, potentially capping it at 10 mph. Whether it may come as a surprise or not, millions of drivers will not accept it. When considering all perspectives, the numbers do not lie, but who will win at the end of the day?

The reason behind speed limits in the UK

In 2024, the UK had a reported number of 104,258 collisions, which included 24,960 fatalities or serious injuries. According to the BBC, more than 900 car accidents occur daily, with the severity varying. A report by the UK Government confirmed that the reported serious injuries in 2023 indicated a 3% decrease from 2022, credited to factors such as speed limits.

The Road Safety Foundation conducted a road safety study, and its findings reported that decreasing the speed limits on roads near schools, hospitals, or in the vicinity of major events such as concerts or football matches may decrease the total number of accidents occurring. Another change in the speed limits would contribute to Vision Zero, which is the foundation’s target to put an end to road deaths and serious injuries.

The new speed limit would be capped at 10 mph

The Road Safety Foundation did not specify which recommended speed limits would be best, but it did emphasise that decreasing speed limits would decrease deaths. According to the foundation’s study findings, a speed limit of 10 mph would result in fewer than one in ten road accidents where someone is killed or seriously injured.

A new national speed limit has already been introduced, but could this 10 mph cap take it too far? The foundation’s findings concur that the following speed limits would be best in the following locations:

A 20 mph speed limit where pedestricans, motorcyclist, and cyclists are mixed with cars

A 30 mph speed limit where head-on collisions and side impacts are only possible between cars

“Prioritising speed management will substantially reduce fatalities and serious injuries, bringing road systems closer to achieving Vision Zero goals.” – Road Safety Foundation report

Not everyone will embrace this new change

In Wales, the new speed limit was changed from 30 mph to 20 mph by the Welsh Government, excluding exemptions given by the local authority. According to the Independent, since its implementation, over 100,000 drivers have been apprehended for speeding. The road safety partnership called GoSafe confirmed that 112,699 transgressions occured up to March 2025.

In January 2025, north Wales recorded the highest speed of 89 mph, with several similar speeds recorded across the country. Voting has consistently indicated that the majority Welsh people remain opposed to the default 20 mph limit. Protests have resulted in the Welsh Government changing the speed limit back to 30 mph in some urban regions.

Perhaps other approaches must be considered to improve road safety, such as the new compulsory tests for senior drivers of the age of 70. It may be bad news for senior drivers, but confirming driving fitness more accurately will save lives.

When it comes to road safety, rather be safe than sorry. However, while speed limits have proven to be successful in increasing overall road safety for everyone, another speed limit change may not be the ideal solution, as it could end up in walking being a faster transport option. Changes must be realistic, and keep in consideration that in cases of emergency, these limits will be ignored anyway.
