First, we had to say goodbye to phone books, paper maps, VHS tapes, CDs and DVDs, and traditional mail. Now, a major bank plans a shutdown wave from 2025 to 2026, with over 200 branches set to go dark. Could this be the beginning of the end of in-person experiences and direct face-to-face services as we know them?

A growing trend of shutting down in the UK

The UK has been experiencing a significant trend of shutdown, a trend that continues to grow, especially across the banking sector. Britons will have to say goodbye to traditional banking services as more branches are experiencing closures as a result of the shifting preference for digital banking solutions. This preference shift has caused a significant decline in in-person services.

According to a major bank’s spokesperson, the banking group is planning this shutdown wave, as more than 21 million of its customers prefer to manage their money with the bank’s app. The closures are part of the banking group’s measures to provide its customers with the best digital experience possible, with more service choices than ever before.

A major bank is planning a 2025-2026 shutdown wave

This banking group is none other than the Lloyds Banking Group, and the banking parent group’s shutdown wave will include Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland branches. Nearly 218 branches will have been shut down by the end of 2025, with 71 more closures scheduled for 2026, marking a significant amount of 289 branches that customers will have to say goodbye to by the end of 2026.

According to Lloyds Bank, any employee who has been affected by the latest branch closure round will have the option to work in an alternative role within the company, either at a different branch or in another part of the business. Along with the branch closures, this major bank will be the first to launch a barcode cash deposit initiative.

The full list of branch closures in 2025 and 2026

According to a report by Express, the following full list of additional Lloyds branches still expected to close in 2025 includes:

Halifax branch closures

Carmarthen – 6 October

Hayes – 6 October

Southport – 7 October

Kingswood – 8 October

Folkestone – 9 October

Crewe – 14 October

Sittingbourne – 15 October

Mold – October 16

Hove – October 20

Telford – October 22

Bexleyheath – October 23

Derby East Street – October 23

Stevenage Queensway – October 23

Blackpool Lytham Road – October 29

Eltham – October 29

Hexham – 5 November

Sleaford – 6 November

Wickford – 10 November

Bolton – 20 November

Manchester Stretford – 15 October

With 14 more expected for 2026.

Lloyds branch closures

Tooting – 8 October

Southall – 15 October

Kidderminster – 16 October

Bury – 21 October

Walthamstow – 22 October

Coventry Foleshill – 4 November

Dunstable – 4 November

Feltham – 4 November

Plymstock – 4 November

Biggleswade – 5 November

Hexham – 5 November

Newton Heath, Manchester – 5 November

Bishopsworth, Bristol – 6 November

Blandford Forum – 10 November

Chard – 11 November

Woodhouse, Sheffield – 11 November

Shipston-on-Stour – 11 November

East Grinstead – 12 November

Loughton – 12 November

Falmouth – 13 November

Ferndown – 17 November

Leominster – 18 November

Pontardawe – 19 November

With 40 more expected for 2026.

Bank of Scotland branch closures

Edinburgh Corstorphine – 29 October

Pitlochry – 30 October

Thornhill – 3 November

With 17 more expected for 2026.
