This is why financial support is vital in the UK. Thankfully, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed an official new way to receive benefits in October, and pensioners can now claim £440. With utility expenses expected to increase with the approaching colder winter months, these benefits will be a welcome addition for several pensioners across the UK.

Financial support is vital in the UK

While the cost of daily expenses may vary across locations in the UK, the general cost of living still remains high, making daily expenses nearly impossible to afford for some Britons. According to Quora, the UK has experienced significantly high inflation in recent years, which has resulted in fuel and food prices increasing and surpassing the average wage growth.

According to key poverty statistics of The House of Commons Library, 21% of Britons were reported to live in relative poverty after housing costs in 2023/2024. What’s more, the absolute poverty rate reached 18%. That is why the UK Government has several financial support schemes in place to assist Britons. One scheme in particular is designed to assist State Pensioners to afford daily expenses, and the DWP has confirmed an official new way to receive benefits from the scheme.

An official new way to receive benefits

Thanks to the ‘Triple Lock’ guarantee, pensioners will receive a significant boost. However, according to data from the DWP, there is a scheme called the Attendance Allowance, which provides additional financial support to 1.7 million older Britons. These numbers also include 155,000 older Britons living in Scotland. Only certain pensioners qualify for Attendance Allowance benefits.

The Attendance Allowance provide financial support to Britons with long-term illnesses, disabilities, and mental or physical health conditions. The scheme supports a list of nearly 50 conditions; however, the most common one is arthritis. In the UK, 508,964 people with the condition receive financial support, including 46,798 people in Scotland, and eligible pensioners can now claim £440.

Pensioners can now claim £440

The amount that qualifying pensioners can claim is a maximum of £440. Pensioners will thus either receive £295.60 (lower rate) or £441.60 (higher rate) during every four-week payment period. For those who have not claimed the Attendance Allowance before, the DWP has declared an official new way to receive benefits. According to the DWP:

“We are temporarily testing a new online service to make claiming Attendance Allowance easier and to improve accessibility. While the online service is not yet widely available, no-one will miss out on the benefit as claimants can still apply in the usual way by post.”

It is important to note that only a limited number of applications will be accepted each week by the new online service, and when applying online, one must use a desktop or laptop computer and not a mobile phone or tablet. You can also apply by post by using the Freepost address on the envelope. A postcode or stamp is not required. If you would like to receive even more money, perhaps you should have a look at Nationwide’s confirmed payout of £175.

According to the Daily Record, residents of Scotland should note that the new Attendance Allowance claims have been replaced by a benefit called the Pension Age Disability Payment. Social Security Scotland administers and distributes this consigned benefit. Current Scottish postcode claimants will be moved to the new payment by the end of 2025.
