Popular supermarket chain bans autumn tradition after the legislation of a new controversial obesity rule. This means we all have to say goodbye to a beloved autumn chocolate ritual. The new controversial rule could be seen as a last resort to address a major public health obstacle in the UK, but we are not so sure that everyone will be very receptive to the new rule. Find out how this popular supermarket chain’s ban could impact you.

Popular supermarket chain bans autumn tradition

Contrary to belief, the UK must face several significant public health obstacles daily, particularly the pervasiveness of chronic diseases such as obesity and high blood pressure. Data obtained from NHS England and The House of Commons Library indicate the following:

In England, 64% of adults were overweight or suffering from obesity in 2023/2024

In 2023/2024, 22.1% of Year 6 children were obese or overweight

According to the NHS England, obesity could have significant health, social, and economic consequences, including but not limited to:

Being a risk factor for other serious health conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases

Difficulty obtaining and maintaining employment

Higher social and economic inequalities

Decreased earnings and limited career progression

In an attempt to address obesity’s pervasiveness, a new controversial obesity rule has been implemented, resulting in a popular supermarket chain banning an autumn tradition involving chocolate.

The new controversial obesity rule

The supermarket chain, Morrisons, has been forced to comply with the new controversial obesity rule. The rule followed the UK Government’s announcement that it plans to address childhood obesity. According to a report by Express.co.uk, the rule was officially introduced on 1 October 2025, and as a result, several items were banned in the midst of autumn celebrations.

The rule resulted in the following being banned:

“Bottomless” drinks

“Buy-one-get-one-free” offers on certain fizzy drinks

Hot sugary drinks such as hot chocolate and mochas

Morrisons customers will thus no longer be able to use its self-serve for sugary hot drinks, bidding goodbye to an autumn chocolate ritual. Those who were planning to drive all the way to Oxfordshire’s Morrisons may now have two reasons to reconsider, as these drivers will now have to face a daily £5 fee.

The impact of the new rule and ban

Morrisons won’t be the only supermarket to implement the ban. Weatherspoons may have to follow suit soon, and the ban will apply to larger high street shops and online retailers as well. Tea and coffee lovers will be relieved to know that regular hot tea and coffee will not be impacted by the new rule.

According to a spokesperson of the Department of Health and Social Care:

“Obesity robs children of the best possible start in life, sets them up for a lifetime of health problems and costs the NHS billions. The end of promotions such as buy one get one free on unhealthy foods was first proposed by the previous government in 2020 and came into force this week.”

Childhood obesity is a problem, but what about the impact it will have on adults and seniors? Thousands of seniors may be losing their Winter Fuel Payments; now they will also be missing out on an autumn chocolate ritual.

While there are several benefits to addressing childhood obesity, we cannot help but wonder if there could be other, better ways to address it. These bans in popular supermarkets and bigger shops are just the first step. It seems that an advertising ban is also in the works, which will prevent the advertising of unhealthy food and drinks before 9 pm.
