It was also the home to the famous mystery novel writer, Agatha Christie. Now, the county is making headlines once again, as Oxford’s £5 toll begins on 29 October 2025. Just like that, the clean-car immunity comes to an end, ushering in a new, but hopefully temporary, traffic era for Oxfordshire drivers. Find out how this new £5 toll could affect you.

Oxford’s £5 toll begins sooner than you think

Experts believe that seasons hold symbolic meanings in life. For instance, some may say that autumn symbolises change and transition to a new beginning. Is this fact or fiction? Well, we may not see literal change falling from the sky just as the colourful leaves fall from trees, but starting this autumn, there will be a change in traffic rules for the drivers of Oxfordshire.

Oxford’s £5 toll will be implemented to address a serious problem experienced on the city’s roads. Initially, the new measure was planned to be implemented no later than 10 November 2025, but now drivers will have to face it even sooner. According to a report by the BBC, six zones will feature the new, and hopefully temporary, toll points where certain drivers will be forced to pay the £5 daily fee.

The new and hopefully temporary traffic era for Oxfordshire drivers

The new and hopefully temporary traffic era in Oxford officially begins 29 October 2025. Drivers without a special permit will have to pay a £5 daily fee at one of the following six toll points that have high congestion levels:

Hythe Bridge Street

Saint Cross Road

Saint Clement’s Street

Thames Street

Marston Ferry Road

Hollow Way

If you are a resident of Oxford, you can apply for a permit on the Oxfordshire City Council’s website. These permits are valid for 12 months. 100-day passes are also available to residents within the Oxford permit area. Residents within the Oxfordshire permit area may also apply for 25-day passes. Oxford’s £5 toll will reportedly come to an end by August 2026 after the reopening of Botley Road.

Oxfordshire drivers are not the only ones adapting to a new controversial bill starting this autumn; driving in the UK is becoming stricter by the minute.

Driving in the UK is becoming stricter by the minute

In several cities across the UK, drivers face a new controversial 7 am to 7 pm driving rule, which will become permanent on more roads. These stricter driving measures are part of a bigger goal to lower the number of vehicles on the road. This addresses the high congestion levels within the UK whilst encouraging healthier lifestyle choices and protecting the environment as a result.

We understand that it is not an easy feat to keep up with all the latest changes, and it will be even harder to embrace them. Yet, change is inevitable, and no driver will remain unaffected, not even those who hold a badge. Do not believe that these new traffic rules will be the last, as there will be more. There has been talk of replacing Oxford’s £5 toll with a traffic filter trial, with fines as potential penalties.

These changes are only the beginning, as authorities are making an effort to introduce more measures to enhance overall road safety for all road users. Most of these measures are being tested and tried much sooner than you may think, so it is vital to stay up to date with the latest traffic rule changes throughout the UK.
