With winter approaching, this number may even become horrendously higher than what most of us would expect. Thankfully, families can claim 25 free hours of electricity at home, and only one action is needed by 31 October. Turn your home from a horror house into a full-blown power saver, as saving on electricity could make a world of difference. Find out what must be done today.

Saving on electricity could make a world of difference

When comparing the UK’s average cost of living index with the rest of the world’s, the UK is significantly higher than most. In fact, according to a report by Korona, it is 2.09 times higher than the global average cost of living index. One significant factor always remains inflation. In October 2022, inflation reached a 41-year peak, marking an increase of 11.1%, according to data obtained from the House of Commons Library.

While it may have decreased in recent years, its impact on the economy has not ceased. Today, several people still battle to cope with the sustained increase in the cost of living, with expenses for food, fuel, and energy frequently affected. Several families can attest to the high cost of electricity in the UK, especially during winter. The UK’s domestic cost of electricity is higher than all but three EU countries.

Thankfully, those impacted by these scary revelations can seek some comfort, as families can claim 25 free hours of electricity at home, but they must hurry!

Families can claim 25 free hours of electricity at home

On 1 October, the energy price cap increased by 2%. Thankfully, USwitch has come up with an approach for families to save on electricity. The UK-based price comparison service and switching website is calling on all families to sign up to the Power Hours initiative for free, no matter which energy supplier your family uses. The initiative entails choosing from five-hour time slots for either a Saturday or a Sunday to earn on your smart meter.

The DWP has named a group that will be missing out on payments, but they still qualify for the Power Hours initiative. USwitch will determine your electricity usage from your smart meter during those time slots and then add it to your earnings. According to USwitch, the following time slots can be selected:

7 am to 12 pm, or

12 pm to 5 pm

One action is needed by 31 October

According to USwitch, one action is needed by 31 October, which is signing up on its app’s home screen. Downloading the app is quick and efficient. After you have downloaded the app, you must connect your home’s smart meter. Once you have completed that, you can select five-hour time slots ahead of each weekend to save electricity in November.

This initiative will be a welcome one, especially considering the HMRC’s deduction of the Winter Fuel Payment from certain pensioners. Anything that assists Britons in saving some money this coming winter will be vital, especially as energy usage increases during the colder winter months. USwitch also allows you to earn money with year-round earning sessions beyond its seasonal offering, such as this one.

Even if you qualify for the Winter Fuel Payments, you have nothing to lose from USwitch’s initiative to save on electricity, so we recommend that you give it a try. By making smarter energy choices, you will put money back into your own pocket. Your effort will also contribute to the UK’s effort to balance the demand of its energy grid. Stay up to date on USwitch’s latest seasonal offerings.
