In the UK, there is a no-ticket speed zone that has captured the world’s attention for a specific reason. Astonishingly enough, one county has not had a single flash since 2019. The announcement may come as a surprise, but according to county officials, there is method in this madness. Find out today why this zone has captured the attention of the world.

Speeding in the UK is a major problem

We all either know a speed devil or we are one. While certain emergencies necessitate speed, such as rushing someone to the hospital in a matter of life or death, speeding is a major and dangerous problem in the UK in general. According to a report by the RAC Media Centre, several surveys have indicated a significant increase in drivers who frequently or occasionally surpass 70 mph on motorways.

Now, 21% of all fatal collisions in the UK are a result of speeding, with more and more road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, particularly becoming vulnerable. The problem is that the increase in excessive speeding has become an acceptable, widespread culture. Fortunately, several regions across the UK have taken matters into their own hands by implementing new traffic rules.

What remains strange is that a certain county has a no-ticket speed zone, with not a single flash since 2019 going off despite an increase in speeding.

The UK’s no-ticket speed zone has captured the world’s attention

Traffic laws are becoming stricter in the UK, as can be seen by the controversial 7 am to 7 pm rule for UK roads. According to a report by This is Oxfordshire, it has been discovered that 17 speed cameras in Oxfordshire County have not had a single flash since 2019, including speed cameras found in:

Abingdon

Bicester

Didcot

Oxford

Witney

These areas have been dubbed no-ticket speed zones, but what makes it even stranger is that the public was not aware that the speed cameras were not operational. According to a Thames Valley Police spokesperson:

“Although they are a tool to punish offenders, the primary role of any road safety camera is to encourage compliance with the law in order to increase safety. It is for this reason that they are clearly visible to motorists. Even when inactive, they provide a deterrent effect.”

Not a single flash since 2019, until now

Thanks to the Freedom of Information laws, new information has confirmed that one speed camera has been turned back on by the Thames Valley Police. The camera has captured speed offences in Audlett Drive, Abingdon, again, starting from August 2025. According to This is Oxfordshire, these cameras were switched off after the Oxfordshire City Council introduced the 30 mph speed limit in 2023.

During the first month of reestablishing the camera’s operation, it had flashed 88 times. Data has indicated speeding offences ranging from 35 mph to 55 mph. The spokesperson added:

“Disclosing whether a specific safety camera is operational or not at any given time provides intelligence to offenders as to when and where offending can take place without punishment, reducing the effectiveness of road policing efforts.”

Oxfordshire County has also caught the attention of thousands of drivers after it approved a controversial bill that will charge a daily £5 fee starting this autumn. We understand that the Oxfordshire County Council is doing everything in its power to address congestion and road safety issues in the region, but some may not see these new measures as fair or as effective as authorities may think. The fact that people continue to speed despite the visibility of speed cameras raises questions about their effectiveness.

While some people absolutely flourish when they are the centre of a camera’s attention, there is one camera flash that has no fans whatsoever.
