However, millions may have to rethink their holiday plans, as new travel rules hit Britons planning to visit 29 countries over the holidays. The news may come as a shock to some, but rest assured that these new travel rules are for the greater good. Find out what these new rules entail, and they could potentially impact your upcoming travel plans for the holidays.

Millions will need to rethink their holiday plans

According to ABTA, Europe has been the most popular travel destination for quite some time, especially among holidaymakers. Over the last year, 83% of travellers have visited the continent, and among them, you may definitely have found more than one or two Britons. It seems as if this year will be no exception, as predictions indicate that up to 4.7 million Britons will travel abroad for Christmas and New Year.

However, travelling abroad is not just popular over the holidays, as data from the Office for National Statistics has confirmed that 94.6 million Britons have gone abroad in 2024. Unfortunately, those numbers may plummet soon. Millions will need to rethink their holiday plans, as new travel rules hit Britons much sooner than they may think. Find out what they entail.

New travel rules hit Britons sooner than they may think

Travellers with a British passport will have to kiss their passports goodbye. New travel rules became official on 12 October 2025. The new travel rules will be phased in over the course of six months, with the entire Entry Exit System expected to be fully operational by April 2026. The new rules form part of a new Entry Exit System, which requires non-EU citizens to register at EU borders.

How it works

Anyone travelling to one of the participating 29 Schengen countries for the first time will have to scan their passport and have their fingerprints and photograph taken, as per the UK Government. Registration will be valid for three years. Upon exit from the country, travellers will present their passport and either provide their fingerprints or a photograph.

We cannot help but wonder if the new Entry Exit System will also be implemented for the first-in-history ‘continental subway.’ We guess only time will tell.

These 29 countries will be participating in the new system

If you plan to travel to either Ireland or Cyprus any time soon, you will be exempt from the Entry Exit System. However, Britons will face the fresh EU rules across these 29 countries:

Austria

Belgium

Bulgaria

Croatia

Czechia

Denmark

Estonia

Finland

France

Germany

Greece

Hungary

Iceland

Italy

Latvia

Liechtenstein

Lithuania

Luxembourg

Malta

Netherlands

Norway

Poland

Portugal

Romania

Slovakia

Slovenia

Spain

Sweden

Switzerland

According to Alex Norris, the Minister for Border Security and Asylum:

“We recognise that EES checks will be a significant change for British travellers, which is why we have worked closely with our European partners to ensure the rollout goes as smoothly as possible. The UK and EU have a shared objective of securing our borders, and these modernisation measures will help us protect our citizens and prevent illegal migration.”

These new travel rules have evoked mixed emotions and could be unnerving for some. However, as long as you stay informed and educate yourself, the entire process should be simple. That being said, before you travel to one of the participating Schengen countries, ensure you are aware of all the travel requirements.
